Spain Weather: A Region-by-Region Guide for UK Travellers

Spain weather is really a dozen different weathers, and the honest answer to almost every question British travellers ask about it starts with where you are going. This page shows a live forecast above, and below it I explain how to read the country by region. Spain runs from the Atlantic islands of the Canaries to the Balearics in the Mediterranean, from the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada in the north-east to the Costa del Sol in the south, with inland cities such as Madrid and Granada and northern ones like Bilbao. Picking the right region matters more than picking the right week.

How to read the forecast

A single Spain temperature figure tells you very little, because the country covers islands, long Mediterranean coastlines, northern cities and a high interior. The live forecast at the top of this page is the place to start, and each region we cover, from the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands to the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, has its own page with more local detail.

I have deliberately not printed monthly averages here. Rather than give you one national number that fits nowhere, I would point you to the forecast and to the regional pages, so the figures you plan around belong to the place you will actually be sleeping in.

Packing for an uncertain week

Because Spain spans islands, coasts and inland cities, the safest approach is to pack for the region rather than the country. Check the forecast for your resort in the week before you fly, and pack light layers you can add or remove, plus something for the evenings if you are heading inland to Madrid or Granada.

If your trip combines a beach base with a city day out, say the Costa Dorada with a day in Barcelona, pack for both. Comfortable walking shoes earn their place on a city day, whatever the beach forecast says.

Why each region differs

The regions most British travellers book are spread far apart. The Canary Islands lie out in the Atlantic, the Balearic Islands sit in the Mediterranean, and the mainland coasts run from the Costa Brava near France down through the Costa Dorada, Valencia and the Costa Blanca to the Costa del Sol. Bilbao is on the northern coast, while Madrid, Seville and Granada are inland cities.

That spread is why people search for very specific places: mojacar spain weather, moraira spain weather and weather los alcázares spain on the Mediterranean side, or la coruna spain weather, weather a coruña spain and vigo spain weather in the far north-west. Each is worth checking on its own forecast before you book, rather than assuming the conditions in one corner of Spain apply to another.

What to pack for Spain in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 22°C by day and 12°C at night.
  • A light rain jacket: about 14 rainy days in October.

Questions about the weather in Spain

What is the best time to visit Spain for good weather?

It depends on the region. The Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, the costas and inland cities such as Madrid and Seville each follow their own pattern. Check the live forecast here and the regional page for the area you are considering before settling on dates.

What is the April weather in Spain like?

There is no single answer for April weather in Spain, or for spain temperature april searches, because conditions vary between the Atlantic islands, the Mediterranean coasts and inland cities. Look at the regional page for your chosen area, and check the forecast close to travel.

What is October Spain weather like, and May weather in Spain?

October spain weather and may weather in spain both vary widely by region, from the Canary Islands to Bilbao. Rather than rely on a national average, compare the regional pages for the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Balearics or Canaries and check the forecast.

Where in Spain has the best weather all year round?

This page does not hold year-round figures, so I would not name a winner. The Canary Islands are the most searched region on our site; check their own page and forecast alongside the Balearics and mainland costas before deciding.

Where can I compare holidays once I have chosen a region?

The page shows live deal buttons from package providers including Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach, alongside hotel prices, tours and tickets, and car hire, so you can compare options here once your region and dates are settled.
