Palau GüellBarcelona is a coastal city of nearly 1.7 million people, set just 15 metres above sea level on the Catalan shore. Most of what draws British travellers lies within two miles of the centre. Two residences designed by Antoni Gaudí, Casa Vicens and Palau Güell, sit close by, alongside a run of art museums from Picasso to Miró. Summers bring highs of 29°C in July and August. With three airports offering direct flights from the UK, a long weekend here takes little planning.

Choosing Your Base in Barcelona
Barcelona is a big city, so the main choice is between the historic core and the waterfront. Base yourself near the cathedral and you will have the MACBA, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine Tree and Palau Güell within a mile on foot. This is the liveliest option, and the busiest.
Staying towards the harbour puts you near Aquarium Barcelona at Port Vell and the coast, which suits families and beach days. Basing yourself further out, nearer Park Güell or Casa Vicens, generally means a calmer evening. Live hotel prices for Barcelona are shown on this page, so you can compare areas side by side.

Tips from Robin
Practical Tips for Your Visit
With nearly 1.7 million residents and a list of world-famous sights, Barcelona gets busy. Book timed tickets for the Holy Family basilica and the Gaudí houses ahead of time rather than joining the queue on the day.
Summer nights rarely drop below 21°C in July and August, so choose accommodation with air conditioning if you travel then. If you visit in September or October, pack a light waterproof, as these are the wettest months. Most central sights are within two miles of one another, so comfortable walking shoes will serve you better than car hire in the city.
