What the climate is like

Barcelona city weather is gentle at both ends of the year. Average highs never drop below 13°C, even in January, and overnight lows stay around 5°C to 6°C through the winter. In summer, highs reach 26°C in June and peak at 29°C in July and August, with nights around 21°C.

Rain is the part people underestimate. Most of it falls in autumn. September brings 91mm over 12 rainy days, and October 105mm over 10 days. Winter is drier than you might expect: December averages just 25mm over 4 days. That makes Barcelona, Spain weather quite different from the grey winter months at home.

By temperature, the best months to visit are May to August. March, April, September, October and November are the shoulder months: still pleasant for sightseeing, but with a greater chance of rain.

Month by month through the year

January and February are the coolest months, with highs of 13°C and 15°C and only 4 to 6 wet days. Barcelona in March weather warms a little: the average Barcelona temperature in March is a high of 16°C and a low of 8°C, with 7 rainy days. April Barcelona weather is mild but showery. The Barcelona temperature in April averages 18°C by day and 10°C at night, with 70mm of rain over 9 days, so pack for both sun and showers.

May is a turning point, with highs of 21°C. June reaches 26°C and July 29°C, and July is the driest month of the summer with 26mm of rain. August matches July's heat, but rainfall rises to 53mm over 7 days. September is still warm at 25°C, though it has the most wet days of the year.

Barcelona in October weather is a mixed picture. Days are still a comfortable 22°C, but October is the wettest month of the year by volume. If you are weighing up the weather in Barcelona, Spain in October, plan some indoor days at the Museu Picasso or the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. November cools to 17°C. December is dry and mild at 15°C.

What to pack by season

For June to August, pack light clothing, sun protection and a hat. The Barcelona temperature reaches 29°C at its peak, and nights stay warm at around 21°C. Bring comfortable walking shoes as well, because Park Güell and the slopes up to Montjuïc Castle involve plenty of climbing.

In the shoulder months, layers work best. In March and April, highs sit between 16°C and 18°C and evenings drop to 8°C to 10°C, so a light jacket earns its place. For September to November, add a compact umbrella or a waterproof, as these are the wettest months.

Winter visitors need a proper coat for the evenings, when lows fall to around 5°C. Daytime highs of 13°C to 15°C are still comfortable for walking through the old town.

Coast and inland towns

The figures on this page come from the Barcelona weather station in the city. They describe conditions in the city centre and the coastal neighbours along the shore, such as Badalona, Montgat and El Prat de Llobregat.

Sant Cugat del Vallès and Santa Coloma de Cervelló sit inland, away from the sea. The climate data here does not include separate readings for them. If you are staying there, check the live forecast above for their conditions closer to your travel date.

What to pack for Barcelona in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 22°C by day and 15°C at night.
  • A light rain jacket: about 10 rainy days in October.
