Hotel and Flights to Barcelona: Where to Stay and Book

City · Spain

Booking a hotel and flights to Barcelona together is the easiest way to handle a city of 1.7 million people. Barcelona airport sits just 11 minutes' drive from the city, and Girona and Reus also have direct flights from the UK. Most of the big sights cluster within a mile or two of the centre: the Basilica of the Holy Family (Sagrada Família), the Gothic cathedral, Palau Güell and the Museu Picasso. Park Güell and Montjuïc Castle are both about 2 miles out. Around the city, the coastal towns of Badalona and Montgat and inland Sant Cugat del Vallès offer quieter bases. On this page you can compare package deals, hotel prices, tours and car hire side by side.

Where to base yourself

For sightseeing, Barcelona itself is the obvious base. Most of the headline sights sit within roughly a mile of the centre: the Sagrada Família, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, Palau Güell, Casa Vicens, the Museu Picasso, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Sea and MACBA. Park Güell, Barcelona Zoo and Montjuïc Castle are about 2 miles out. If the best area to stay in Barcelona for sightseeing is your question, the answer is anywhere central, because you can walk to a great deal of it.

If you would rather be by the sea without being in the thick of the city, look along the coast. Badalona, a sizeable town of more than 200,000 people, is about 6 miles from the centre. Little Montgat, with around 10,000 residents, is about 8 miles away. El Prat de Llobregat, also on the coast, is about 6 miles out and just 3 minutes from the airport, which makes it practical for early flights or a one night stay in Barcelona before heading home.

Inland, Sant Cugat del Vallès is about 7 miles from the centre and roughly 17 minutes from the airport. Santa Coloma de Cervelló is a small town of about 7,000 people, some 7 miles out. Both suit travellers who want a calmer base and do not mind travelling in to see the sights.

What kind of stay to expect

In the city itself you are booking a city hotel: this is a large urban destination rather than a beach resort, so expect hotels built around sightseeing, shopping and evenings out. If you are after a Barcelona adults only hotel or the best spa hotel in Barcelona, filter the live hotel prices on this page by those features. Read the room descriptions carefully, as facilities vary from property to property.

Self catering in Barcelona suits families and longer stays, and the smaller towns around the city give you more room to spread out. People searching for villas to rent in Barcelona will usually find more space in quieter places such as Sant Cugat del Vallès or Montgat than in the dense centre. Just factor in the drive or journey into town each day.

Tips before you book

Packages bundle your flights, hotel and often transfers into one booking. With Barcelona airport 11 minutes from the city, transfers are short. From Girona, allow about 67 minutes to Barcelona or 55 minutes to Montgat. From Reus, it is about 71 minutes to El Prat de Llobregat. You can compare Barcelona holidays with flight and hotel from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach here, alongside hotel-only prices if you have already sorted flights.

Timing makes a difference. May to August are the most popular months, and July and August reach highs of 29°C. UK school holidays push demand up, so if you are hunting for a cheap flight and hotel to Barcelona, the shoulder months of March, April and November are worth a look. September and October are the wettest months, with around 91mm and 105mm of rain. For short city breaks to Barcelona with a hotel, room-only or breakfast-included rates usually make more sense than full board, because you will be out eating in the city.

If you plan day trips out to Montgat, Badalona or Sant Cugat del Vallès, compare car hire on this page too. You can also book tours and tickets for the major sights in advance.
