Costa Brava Spain Weather: Month by Month Guide

Coast · Spain

Costa Brava Spain weather follows a clear Mediterranean rhythm, and the figures here come from the climate record at Lloret de Mar. Winters are mild rather than warm, with January highs of about 14°C and nights near 5°C. Spring warms steadily through April and May, summer peaks in July and August at around 29°C, and autumn stays pleasant but turns noticeably wetter in September and October. July is the driest month of the year, with only three rain days on average. For British travellers, that means a short, reliable beach season and long, softer shoulder months that suit walking, castles and village days more than lying by the sea.

The weather pattern at a glance

The Costa Brava weather splits neatly into three seasons. The hot season runs through July and August, when daytime highs sit around 29°C and nights rarely fall below 21°C. These are the best months for a beach holiday, and July in particular is reliably dry.

Either side of summer come the long shoulder months, from February to June and from September to November. Temperatures climb from 15°C in February to 25°C in June, then ease back from 25°C in September to 18°C in November. The catch is rain: September and October are the wettest months, with 84mm and 87mm respectively, and May has the most rain days of the year at 12.

December and January are the coolest months, with highs of 14°C to 15°C and nights down to 5°C. January is surprisingly dry, with only four rain days, which makes it a quiet option for a city break in Girona rather than a beach trip.

What each month brings

Spring starts gently. March reaches about 16°C with six rain days. The Costa Brava weather in April lifts to 18°C by day and 10°C at night, but with 73mm of rain over eight days it is a month for walks up to Montgrí Castle or around the Vila Vella in Tossa de Mar with a jacket to hand. Costa Brava weather in May brings 21°C highs, though 12 rain days, usually showery, make it the most changeable month. By June the Costa Brava weather feels like early summer, with 25°C highs, 18°C nights and nine rain days.

The Costa Brava weather in July is the year's best bet: 29°C highs, 21°C nights and only three rain days. The Costa Brava weather in August keeps the same heat, but rain returns to around 59mm across seven days, often in short bursts. This is also peak school-holiday season, so packages from the UK are in highest demand.

The Costa Brava weather in September stays warm at 25°C, with 17°C nights, but brings ten rain days. The Costa Brava October weather is mild and wet: the Costa Brava temperature in October averages 23°C by day and 16°C at night, with the year's highest rainfall of 87mm over 11 days. November cools to 18°C, and December settles at 15°C with seven rain days.

What to pack by season

For July and August, pack light cotton and linen, a sun hat and high-factor sun cream; evenings stay around 21°C, so a thin layer is all you need for dinner out in Lloret de Mar or Palamós. A compact umbrella is still worth slipping into an August suitcase.

For the shoulder months, think layers. Spring and autumn days between 18°C and 25°C feel warm in the sun, but nights from 9°C to 17°C call for a jumper or light jacket, and the rain-day counts in May, September and October make a packable waterproof sensible. Comfortable shoes help on the steep lanes of Tossa de Mar and Cadaqués.

In December and January, bring a proper warm coat for evenings near 5°C. Days around 14°C are pleasant for sightseeing, such as the Salvador Dalí House Museum in Cadaqués, but this is not swimming weather.

What to pack for Costa Brava in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 23°C by day and 16°C at night.
  • A light rain jacket: about 11 rainy days in October.
