Girona Spain Weather: Month by Month Guide to the Climate

City · Costa Brava · Spain

Girona Spain weather follows a clear rhythm: hot, fairly dry summers, a damp late spring and mild, bright winters with chilly nights. July and August both reach average highs of 32°C, while December and January settle at 14 to 15°C by day and around 4°C after dark. Girona sits inland from the Costa Brava rather than on the shore, so this is a city of cathedral steps, museums and old-quarter lanes as much as sunshine. Girona airport is only about 9 minutes' drive away with direct flights from the UK, which makes it easy to pick your month. What the climate is like

Girona has a warm Mediterranean pattern with one quirk British travellers should know about: the wettest stretch is not winter but late spring. May brings the most rain of the year, around 101mm spread over 14 wet days, and June also sees 14 wet days, though temperatures are already climbing to 27°C.

Summer then turns hot and drier, with July and August peaking at 32°C and night-time lows of 20 to 21°C. Winter is the driest season in terms of rainfall, with November, December and January each recording only 31 to 32mm, but nights drop to around 4°C, so you will want a proper coat in the evenings.

The shoulder months run from February to June and again from September to November. They offer the gentlest walking weather for exploring the Barri Vell and the riverside, without the full heat of high summer.

Month by month through the year

January is the coolest month alongside December, with highs of 14°C, lows of 4°C and just five wet days. February warms to 16°C but is wetter, with around eight rainy days. March reaches 19°C and is relatively settled, while April climbs to 21°C with ten wet days and noticeably more rain.

May is the wettest month at 101mm over 14 days, although highs of 23°C keep it pleasant between showers. June reaches 27°C, still with 14 wet days. July and August are the hottest months at 32°C; July is drier, with about 37mm and seven wet days, and August sees roughly six wet days. Expect warm nights of 20 to 21°C.

September eases back to 27°C, though it can bring short, heavy downpours, around 77mm across eight days. October stays mild at 24°C with ten wet days, November cools to 18°C, and December returns to 15°C by day and 4°C at night, with only six wet days.

What to pack by season

For July and August, pack light, breathable clothes, a hat and high-factor sun cream: 32°C on stone streets and cathedral steps feels hotter than it sounds, and evenings stay warm. A light layer is useful for air-conditioned museums.

In spring, and especially May and June, a compact umbrella or packable rain jacket earns its place, alongside layers for days that move between 20s sunshine and showers. Comfortable shoes with grip help on wet cobbles in the old quarter.

From November to February, bring a warm jacket, jumper and scarf. Days of 14 to 18°C can feel springlike in the sun, but nights fall to 4 or 5°C, so think British autumn evenings rather than a beach holiday.

What to pack for Girona in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 24°C by day and 14°C at night.
  • A light rain jacket: about 10 rainy days in October.
