Murcia Spain Weather: Month-by-Month Climate Guide

City · Spain

Murcia Spain weather follows a clear and fairly dependable pattern. Summers are long and fiercely hot, winters are mild and mostly dry, and the rain that does fall tends to arrive in short bursts in March, April and September. Average highs climb from 17°C in January to 35°C in July, and over a whole year the city sees only around 52 days with rain. Murcia sits inland rather than on the coast, so the heat builds without a sea breeze to soften it. That makes timing matter for a city break around the Cathedral and the museums. Below is the month-by-month picture from the local climate station, so you can choose the right weeks to book from the UK.

What the climate is like

Murcia has a hot, dry climate with a big gap between seasons. The warmest months are July and August, when average highs reach 35°C and 34°C and nights stay around 22°C. The coolest is January, with highs of 17°C and lows of 6°C, which still feels gentle compared with a British winter.

Rainfall is low overall, roughly 386mm a year, and it is spread unevenly. March is the wettest month at 68mm over about eight days, closely followed by September at 64mm over six days. July is almost completely dry, with 3mm and a single rainy day on average.

The live forecast at the top of this page covers the days ahead; if you are searching for the weather in Murcia, Spain, over 10 days, that is the place to look. For anything further out, such as a 28 day weather forecast for Murcia, Spain, the monthly averages below are a more reliable guide than long-range predictions.

Month by month through the year

The best months for a visit are April, May and June, then September, October and November. April brings highs of 22°C, though it can be showery with around seven wet days. May, at 27°C and five wet days, is arguably the sweetest spot for sightseeing, and June warms to 31°C with only three rainy days. In autumn, September stays hot at 30°C but carries some of the year's heaviest rain, October settles to a comfortable 26°C, and November cools to 21°C with five wet days.

July and August are for heat lovers only. With highs of 35°C and 34°C in an inland city, afternoons are best spent indoors at the Archaeological Museum or the Museo de Bellas Artes, saving the Plaza de toros de La Condomina area and the old streets for early morning and evening.

December, January, February and March are the shoulder months. December and February are pleasantly mild at 18°C and fairly dry, with three wet days each. January is the coolest at 17°C, while March, at 20°C, is warmer but also the wettest month of the year, so pack for a mix.

What to pack by season

From June to September, think light, loose clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream, plus a refillable water bottle. A thin layer is still useful for cool interiors such as Murcia's Cathedral, the Palacio Episcopal and the Monasterio de Santa Clara la Real, and comfortable shoes help on the short walks between them.

In spring and autumn, a mix works best: T-shirts for the day, a light jumper for evenings, and a compact umbrella in March, April and September, when rain is most likely. For winter breaks, bring a warm jacket for nights that dip to 6 to 8°C, even though days are often bright and mild enough for lunch outdoors.

If you plan to reach the Noria of Alcantarilla or the Cabecico del Tesoro site just outside the city, car hire gives you flexibility, and you can compare car hire, hotel prices, tours and package holidays on this page. Flights land at Murcia, 18 minutes away, or Alicante, around 53 minutes by road.
