Murcia Holidays: City Breaks, Sights and When to Go

City · Spain

Murcia holidays are city holidays first and foremost. This is an inland regional capital of almost half a million people, not a beach resort, and its appeal lies in a compact old centre built around Murcia's Cathedral, a cluster of palaces and convents, and museums such as the Museo Salzillo and the Museo de Bellas Artes. For British travellers it is unusually easy to reach: Murcia airport (RMU) has direct flights from the UK and sits about 18 minutes' drive from the centre, with Alicante a little under an hour away. Spring and autumn bring warm, settled days, while July and August are properly hot. Below you will find the sights, the seasons and the practicalities, and you can compare packages, hotels and tours on this page.

Getting to Murcia from United Kingdom

Murcia (RMU), Alicante (ALC) and Valencia (VLC) have direct flights from the UK, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, London Luton and Manchester.

What kind of place it is

Murcia is a working Spanish city of around 472,000 people rather than a holiday resort, and that is precisely its pleasure. The historic core is dense with cultural property: the cathedral and its own museum, the Palacio Episcopal, the Palacio de San Esteban and the Palacio de los Saavedra all sit within walking distance of one another, and the Monasterio de Santa Clara la Real and the Convento de las Agustinas del Corpus Christi add quieter cloistered corners.

The city's longer story is close to the surface too. The Al-Andalusian palatial complex at San Esteban is an archaeological site right in the centre, the Archaeological Museum of Murcia and the Museo de la Ciudad fill in the background, and the Museo Salzillo is devoted to the region's best-known sculptor. A mile or so out, the La Condomina bullring is one of the city's landmarks.

One point worth knowing before you book: Murcia is inland. It suits travellers who want a city break with good weather, culture and food rather than a fortnight on the sand.

Where to base yourself

Most visitors stay in Murcia itself, where nearly all the sights are within a short walk of the cathedral. The Museo de Bellas Artes, the Museo Salzillo and the La Condomina bullring are each around half a mile from the centre, so a central base means very little time spent travelling.

Alcantarilla, a town of about 41,000 people some 5 miles from the city, makes a straightforward half-day outing. Its Noria, a historic waterwheel now home to a museum, and the Convento de los Mínimos are the reasons to go. On the way, the archaeological site of Cabecico del Tesoro lies about 4 miles from central Murcia.

When to go

The best months are April, May, June, September, October and November. Spring warms from around 22°C in April to 27°C in May and 31°C in June, while autumn eases from 30°C in September to 26°C in October and 21°C in November, all comfortable temperatures for walking between churches and museums.

High summer is a different proposition. July averages 35°C with barely any rain and August is hardly cooler at 34°C, so plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings if you go then. Winter is mild by British standards, with highs of 17°C to 18°C from December to February, though nights drop to around 6°C to 8°C. March is the wettest month, with roughly 68mm of rain over eight days, and September can bring heavy downpours too.

Getting there from the UK

Two airports have direct flights from the United Kingdom. Murcia airport (RMU) is the obvious choice, about 18 minutes' drive from both the city and Alcantarilla. Alicante (ALC) is the alternative, around 53 minutes from Murcia and 59 minutes from Alcantarilla, and is worth checking when flight times or departure airports suit you better.

If you are bringing your own car, the nearest ferry port listed is Dénia, about 90 miles away. For most travellers, though, a flight and either a transfer or car hire is the simplest way in.

Booking your trip

Many British travellers book this kind of trip as a package, with flights, accommodation and transfers bundled together, so the airport journey is arranged for you. On this page you can compare package deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach, check the board basis each offer includes, and see how prices move around the school holidays, when demand from UK families is highest.

If you prefer to arrange things yourself, you can check hotel prices, compare car hire for the short drive from Murcia or Alicante airport, and browse tours and tickets for the city and Alcantarilla here as well.

Questions people ask

Is Murcia on the coast?

Which airport is closest to Murcia?

Murcia's Cathedral and its museum lead the list, alongside the Palacio Episcopal, the Monasterio de Santa Clara la Real, the Museo Salzillo, the Museo de Bellas Artes, the Archaeological Museum and the Al-Andalusian palatial complex at San Esteban.

Is Alcantarilla worth a trip from Murcia?
