What the climate is like

Valencia weather follows a classic Mediterranean rhythm: hot, dry summers and mild winters, with most of the rain arriving in short bursts rather than long grey weeks. The temperature in Valencia climbs steadily from 16°C in January to 24°C in May, peaks at 31°C in July and August, then eases back to 17°C by December. Nights follow suit, from about 7°C in midwinter to 22°C at the height of summer.

The best months for a holiday are May, June, July, August and October, when it is warm and settled. January to April, September, November and December are shoulder months: cooler or a little more changeable, but very comfortable for walking between the City of Arts and Sciences, the Cathedral and the museums. Since the forecast above covers only the coming days, use this pattern to choose your dates, then compare package holidays, hotel prices and car hire on this page.

Month by month through the year

Winter is mild and fairly dry. January brings 16°C highs and just three wet days, while Valencia February weather is similar at 17°C, with the lowest rainfall of the year at 18mm. Valencia March weather is livelier: 19°C by day, but eight wet days and 71mm of rain, so pack for showers. Valencia April weather settles to 20°C with six wet days, and Valencia weather in May is a real turning point, 24°C, nights of 15°C and only four wet days.

June reaches 28°C, and July is the driest month of all, 31°C with two wet days and 15mm of rain. August matches July's heat at 31°C, with warm 22°C nights. September stays hot at 28°C but is the wettest month by volume, 84mm over eight days, usually in heavy bursts.

Valencia October weather is one of the best of the year: 24°C highs, 16°C nights and six wet days. November cools to 20°C with 68mm of rain, and Valencia December weather is calm, 17°C by day, 8°C at night and only three wet days, a good fit for a festive city break.

What to pack by season

From June to August, think light: breathable cotton or linen, a sunhat, high-factor sun cream and sandals, with something to cover shoulders for Valencia Cathedral or the Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken. Evenings stay warm at around 19°C to 22°C, so a jacket is rarely needed.

In May and October, bring summer clothes plus a light layer for evenings that drop to 15°C or 16°C. For September, March and November, add a compact umbrella or a rain jacket, as these months carry the heaviest rainfall. From December to February, a warm jumper and a mid-weight coat cover the 7°C to 8°C nights, while daytime sightseeing at L'Oceanogràfic or the Museu de Belles Arts often needs no more than a light jacket.

What to pack for Valencia in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 24°C by day and 16°C at night.
