Tenerife Weather: Month by Month Guide for UK Travellers

Island · Canary Islands · Spain

Tenerife weather is the main reason so many British travellers book the island for winter sun as well as summer. The figures on this page come from the climate station at Adeje, on the south-west coast close to Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. Daytime highs never drop below 20°C in any month, from 20°C in February up to 28°C in August, and rain is light all year: even the wettest month, March, averages only 39mm. Below, Robin walks you through the year month by month, what to pack for each season, and where these numbers do and do not apply on the island.

What the climate is like

In short, the Tenerife Canary Islands weather pattern is mild and steady. At Adeje, daytime highs move within a narrow band, from 20°C in February to 28°C in August, and night-time lows run from 13°C to 22°C. There is no real winter as a British reader would know it, which is why eleven months of the year count as good months to go, with February as the only shoulder month.

Rain is scarce rather than absent. Most months see two to four wet days, February tops the table with six, and the summer from April to August is very dry. June records 30mm, but over just two days, so a single shower can account for the whole month.

On the page you can compare package holidays from the providers shown, along with hotel prices, car hire and tours, so you can match a date to the weather that suits you.

Month by month through the year

January brings highs of 21°C, lows of 14°C and around four wet days. Tenerife weather in February is the coolest of the year at 20°C by day and 13°C at night, with six wet days, the most of any month, though only 27mm in total. March warms to 22°C but is the wettest month by volume at 39mm across five days. Tenerife weather in April is one of the best deals of the spring: 23°C highs, 16°C lows, just 5mm of rain and two wet days. May is similar at 22°C.

Summer climbs steadily. June reaches 24°C, July 26°C with no recorded rain, and August is the warmest month at 28°C, with nights of 22°C. September eases to 25°C with four wet days.

Tenerife weather in October is a favourite for half-term: temperatures in Tenerife in October average 26°C by day and 20°C at night, as warm as July, with 12mm of rain over four days. November holds 24°C, and December settles back to 21°C highs and 15°C lows, with around four wet days.

What to pack by season

From December to March, pack for warm days and cooler evenings. Highs of 20°C to 22°C feel properly warm in the sun, but lows of 13°C to 15°C mean a light jumper or jacket for dinner outside. A compact umbrella is sensible in February and March, the two rainiest months.

From April to November, summer clothes cover most needs. Highs rise from 23°C in April to 28°C in August, and nights stay at 16°C to 22°C, so a thin layer is about all you need after dark. High-factor sun cream, a hat and sunglasses matter most from June to October, when highs sit between 24°C and 28°C.

If you plan days out, such as a visit to Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz or Siam Park near Playa de las Américas, comfortable shoes and a refillable water bottle earn their place in any season.

South coast versus the rest

The climate table here is recorded at Adeje, so it describes the south-west coast most directly: Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Los Gigantes. That makes it the best guide to south Tenerife weather, to the Los Americas Tenerife weather many visitors search for, and to Tenerife South airport weather, since the airport is 14 minutes from Playa de las Américas and 15 minutes from Adeje. If you are looking up Tenerife sur weather or the weather at Tenerife South airport, Spain, these are the figures to use.

The north of the island, including Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava and Santa Cruz de Tenerife near Tenerife North airport, is not covered by this station, so conditions there may differ from the Adeje numbers.
