What the climate is really like

The weather in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, never swings far. Average highs run from 22°C in January and February to 30°C in August, and the lows stay between 15°C and 23°C all year. Rain is the bigger variable. Between September and June there are usually seven to fourteen wet days a month, although the totals are modest: no month averages much more than 57mm.

The best months are April, July and August. Every other month counts as shoulder season. It is still warm, but you should expect a few showery days. Summer is when the town is at its most reliably dry.

Most British travellers come on a package holiday. Direct flights from the UK land at Tenerife South, about 37 minutes' drive from Puerto de la Cruz. Tenerife North is closer at 19 minutes but has no direct UK service. You can compare packages, hotel prices and car hire on this page, including deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach. Prices generally rise during the school holidays, which fall in the driest summer weeks.

Month by month through the year

January to March are the mildest months, with highs of 22 to 23°C and lows of 15 to 16°C. Expect ten or eleven wet days a month and around 48 to 57mm of rain. January is the wettest month by volume. April warms up to 25°C, and rain falls to 37mm over about seven days, which is why it ranks among the best months. May is the odd one out. It is still 24°C, but it has the most wet days of the year, about fourteen. June reaches 26°C, with around eleven showery days.

July and August are the clear peak. Highs are 29°C and 30°C, nights are 22 to 23°C, and there is just 6mm and 11mm of rain over two or three days. September stays warm at 27°C with about eight wet days.

October is a surprise. Highs still average 29°C, but rain returns, with 56mm over eleven days. November eases to 27°C with nine wet days, and December sits at 24°C with eight. For a precise 14-day or 10-day view of Puerto de la Cruz before you fly, check the live forecast above. This table shows the longer pattern.

What to pack by season

From November to March, pack summer clothes for the daytime, but add a light jumper or jacket for evenings, when lows sit around 15 to 19°C. A compact umbrella or thin waterproof earns its place, with eight to eleven wet days in most of these months. It is useful for a morning at the Archaeological Museum or the Jardín de Aclimatación de la Orotava while a shower passes.

In spring and early summer, bring layers and a light rain jacket, especially in May. July and August call for proper sun protection, a hat and plenty of light clothing, with highs of 30°C and warm nights near 23°C. Bring comfortable shoes all year for the old streets, the lighthouse and the short walk to Playa Jardin.

What to pack for Puerto de la Cruz in October

  • Light clothes, a hat and high-factor sun cream: October highs average 29°C.
  • A light rain jacket: about 11 rainy days in October.
