Gran Canaria Weather: Month by Month Guide for Holidays
Island · Canary Islands · Spain
Gran Canaria weather is the main reason so many British travellers book this island in the depths of a UK winter. The climate figures below come from Maspalomas, on the southern coast near Playa del Inglés and Meloneras. They show daytime highs that never drop below 23°C, even in January and February, and a summer peak of 33°C in August. Rain is scarce. July and August record none at all, and no month has more than five wet days. Direct flights from the UK land at Gran Canaria airport (LPA), so a winter week in the sun is a short hop away. The live forecast sits above this guide. Below, you will find the pattern month by month, what to pack, and how to compare package deals here.

Monthly averages measured at Maspalomas.
What the year looks like
The island's climate is warm all year. At the Maspalomas station, average highs sit between 23°C and 28°C for most of the year, then climb to 31°C in July and 33°C in August. Night-time lows are just as steady: 15°C in February is the coolest figure in the table, and August nights average 24°C. So when people search for the Gran Canaria Spain weather, the honest answer is mild in winter and properly hot in high summer, with very little in between.
Rain is light and comes in short bursts. March has the highest total, at 33mm, and November has the most wet days, with five. Every other month records four wet days or fewer. July and August stay completely dry. Eleven months of the year count as good for a holiday. August is left off only because it is the hottest month, not because of rain.
Month by month on the coast
January and December both average highs of 23°C and lows of 17°C, with just one and two wet days respectively. The temperature in Gran Canaria in February is similar by day, at 23°C, but nights dip to 15°C, the coolest of the year. That is why February weather here suits walkers and sun-seekers alike, and why it is such a popular half-term choice. The temperature in Gran Canaria in March rises to 25°C, though March brings the year's highest rainfall total, 33mm spread over about four days.
In April, Gran Canaria weather settles at 26°C by day and 18°C at night, with only 7mm of rain. May and June stay in the mid-twenties, with June nights warming to 20°C. July jumps to 31°C, and August peaks at 33°C with 24°C nights and no rain at all. These two months are best for travellers who genuinely want heat.
September eases back to 27°C with a single wet day. October weather is one of the best-kept secrets of the calendar: 28°C highs and 22°C lows, warmer than June, with four short wet days. November holds 27°C but is the wettest month by days, with five, before December returns to 23°C. For a quick check before you leave, the Gran Canaria forecast above this guide shows the coming days.
What to pack by season
From December to March, pack summer clothes for the day and a light jumper or jacket for evenings. February nights average 15°C, and that can feel cool after a day on the beach at Maspalomas or Puerto Rico. A compact umbrella or waterproof is worth taking in March and November, the two wettest months, though rain rarely lasts.
From April to June, and again in September and October, light layers are all most people need. Days sit between 25°C and 28°C, and nights stay at 18°C to 22°C. In July and August, with highs of 31°C to 33°C and no rain recorded, pack high-factor sun cream, a hat and loose cotton clothing. Bring sturdy shoes all year if you plan to walk at Bandama Caldera, Barranco de Guayadeque or Tamadaba Natural Park.
South coast versus the hills
All the temperatures in Gran Canaria quoted on this page are recorded at Maspalomas, on the southern coast. They describe conditions in and around the main resorts: Playa del Inglés, Meloneras, Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán. We do not have separate figures for the north of the island around Las Palmas, Arucas and Gáldar, or for inland towns such as Teror, Santa Brígida and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Treat the table as a guide to the beaches rather than the whole island.
If a day trip to the interior is part of your plan, check the live forecast before you set off. That might be the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo, the Riscos de Tirajana or the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino in Teror. You can compare car hire, tours and tickets on this page, alongside package holidays from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach.
