Gran Canaria Las Palmas Weather: Month by Month Guide

City · Canary Islands · Gran Canaria · Spain

Gran Canaria Las Palmas weather is remarkably even. The city's average daytime high never drops below 20°C, even in the depths of a British winter, and it peaks at 26°C in August. Nights stay mild too, ranging from 15°C between January and March to 21°C in late summer. The real seasonal shift is rain rather than heat. July and August see just three wet days each, while October to March brings more frequent showers, with up to ten wet days in March. Below, I take you through the figures month by month, which months suit a beach fortnight on Playa de Las Canteras, which suit sightseeing in Vegueta, and what to pack.

What the climate is like

Las Palmas weather swings across a narrow band. Average highs sit between 20°C and 26°C all year, and average lows between 15°C and 21°C, a spread of only six degrees from the coolest month to the warmest. If you are used to British seasons, it can feel as though the city has just two: a mild, slightly showery winter and a warm, dry summer.

The best months, judged on the figures, are April to September plus December. Rain falls away sharply from April, and July and August record under 10mm each. January, February, March, October and November are the shoulder months: still warm by UK standards, but with eight to ten wet days and the year's heaviest rainfall, which peaks at 59mm in February and 53mm in October.

The live forecast at the top of this page shows the weather forecast for Las Palmas over the coming days. Once you have picked your month, you can compare package holidays, hotel prices and car hire here.

Month by month through the year

January to March is the coolest stretch, with highs of 20°C and lows of 15°C. Las Palmas weather in January brings around nine wet days and 41mm of rain. February is the wettest month by volume at 59mm, and Las Palmas weather in March delivers the most wet days of the year, around ten, although the total falls back to 42mm. Showers tend to come and go, so these months suit city days in the museums of Vegueta, such as the Canarian Museum and the House museum of Christopher Columbus, as much as the beach.

April and May warm gently to 21°C and 22°C, with rain dropping to six or seven days a month. June reaches 24°C, and July and August are the high point: highs of 25°C and 26°C, lows of 20°C and 21°C, and only three wet days each. If you want reliable sunshine for Playa de Las Canteras or El Confital, this is the window.

September and October hold on to 25°C highs, but the rain returns in October, with 53mm across nine days. November cools to 23°C. Las Palmas weather in December is a welcome surprise for anyone escaping a grey British Christmas: 21°C highs, 16°C lows and around seven wet days.

What to pack each season

From June to September, pack for warm, dry days and nights that rarely dip below 19°C: light clothes, sun protection and swimwear, with little need for anything heavier. These are the months when you can spend the whole day outdoors, from the beach at Alcavaneras to the walk out towards Castillo de la Luz.

From October to March, Las Palmas temperature readings still give you 20°C to 25°C by day, but evenings fall to 15°C or 16°C and showers are more frequent. A light jacket or jumper for the evenings and a compact waterproof will cover most days. If you plan to head out to the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo or the rim of Bandama Caldera, sensible walking shoes earn their place in the case too.

April, May and December sit in between: warm days, cooler nights and the odd shower. Pack layers and you will be comfortable.

What to pack for Las Palmas in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 25°C by day and 20°C at night.
  • A light rain jacket: about 9 rainy days in October.
