What the climate is like
Puerto Rico's climate figures come from the Maspalomas station along the same southern coast. The pattern is simple: warm all year, very dry, and hotter in high summer. Maximum temperatures run from 23°C in December, January and February up to 33°C in August. Night-time lows sit between 15°C in February and 24°C in August, so evenings rarely call for more than a light layer.
Rain is scarce. Annual totals are small, and no month averages more than five wet days. November is the month most likely to bring a shower, with around five rain days. March sees the largest amount in a single month, about 33mm. July and August are completely dry on average.
Almost every month suits a beach holiday. August is the one month left off the list of best months, mainly because 33°C afternoons are more than many people want for a week of sightseeing.
Month by month in Puerto Rico
January is a favourite winter escape, with highs of 23°C, lows of 17°C and typically only one rain day. February keeps the same 23°C afternoons but has the coolest nights of the year at 15°C, and around four wet days. In March, highs reach 25°C. It is the wettest month by volume, though rain still falls on only about four days.
April to June settle at 25 to 26°C by day, and nights warm from 18°C to 20°C. Each month brings three or four light rain days. Then the heat arrives. July reaches 31°C and August 33°C, both with no recorded rain, and nights stay warm at 23 to 24°C.
September eases back to 27°C with about one rain day, which makes it one of the most comfortable months of the year. October is warmer than you might expect at 28°C, with lows of 22°C. November holds 27°C but has the most rain days, around five. December returns to 23°C highs with roughly two wet days, ideal for winter sun over Christmas. What to pack by season
From December to March, pack beachwear and sun cream as usual, because 23 to 25°C afternoons are proper sunbathing weather. Add a light jumper or jacket for evenings, when lows drop to 15 to 17°C, particularly in February. A compact umbrella is worth bringing in November and March, the months with the most rain, though you may never open it.
From April to June and again in September and October, light summer clothes do the job day and night. A thin layer for a breezy evening on the seafront is enough. For July and August, think high-factor sun cream, a hat, sunglasses and loose cotton. With highs of 31 to 33°C and nights still in the twenties, plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon.
