What the climate is really like
The weather in Mogan Gran Canaria follows a gentle curve rather than true seasons. From December to February, daytime highs hold at 23°C and nights drop to around 15°C to 17°C. Spring warms slowly to 25°C or 26°C, and then July and August jump to 31°C and 33°C, with warm nights of 23°C to 24°C. Autumn stays generous, with 27°C to 28°C from September to November.
Rain is light by any British standard. The wettest month on the record is March, at 33mm, followed by November at 29mm, and even then you are looking at four or five wet days in the month. Every month except August appears on the list of best months to go; August is simply the hottest of the year, which suits some travellers and not others.
Month by month through the year
January is the driest winter month, with 5mm of rain on a single wet day and highs of 23°C. February keeps the same high but has the coolest nights of the year at 15°C and around four wet days. March warms to 25°C but brings the most rain, 33mm, though spread over only four days. April and May settle at 25°C to 26°C with very little rain, and June edges up to 26°C with nights of 20°C.
July and August are the dry, hot heart of the year: 31°C and then 33°C, with zero rain days recorded. September cools a touch to 27°C with just one wet day, making it one of the easiest months for a beach holiday. October is warmer at 28°C with nights of 22°C, and November holds 27°C but has the most wet days, five. December returns to 23°C with two wet days, which makes it a good bet for winter sun over Christmas.
For British families, the warm, dry summer months coincide with school holidays, when package prices generally rise; spring and autumn half-terms offer milder heat. You can compare package deals and hotel prices for your dates on this page.
What to pack for each season
From December to March, pack summer clothes for the day but add a light jumper or jacket for evenings, when temperatures fall to 15°C to 17°C. A compact umbrella is optional rather than essential; even the wettest months see only a handful of rainy days.
For April to June and again from September to November, light layers work well, with highs of 25°C to 28°C and mild nights. In July and August, think about the heat first: high-factor sun cream, a hat, sunglasses and loose cotton clothing, as highs reach 31°C to 33°C and nights rarely dip below 23°C. Comfortable shoes are worth bringing year round if you plan to walk out to the Punta del Castillete Lighthouse or visit the Cañada de los Gatos archaeological site.
