Fuerteventura Villa Holidays and Hotels: Where to Stay

Island · Canary Islands · Spain

Fuerteventura villa holidays and hotel stays both start with one choice: which end of the island suits you. In the north, Corralejo looks across to Lobos Island and runs into its own natural park. Caleta de Fuste sits on the east coast, while Costa Calma and Jandía lie in the south near Jandía Natural Park and the long sands of Cofete. Fuerteventura airport (FUE) has direct flights from the UK and is only 5 minutes from Puerto del Rosario, the island's largest town. Daytime highs run from 21°C in February to 28°C in August, and no month averages more than six rainy days, so this is a year-round island. Below, I compare the areas, the kinds of stay each suits, and how to book well.

Which area suits your stay

Corralejo is the most searched-for resort on the island and the obvious pick if you want a lively base in the north. It has a ferry port, Lobos Island and its Punta Martiño Lighthouse just offshore, and Corralejo Natural Park on its edge. A short way west, El Cotillo is a small coastal village of around 1,200 people, with the Torre del Tostón and Tostón Lighthouse nearby. It suits travellers who want quieter evenings. Inland, La Oliva is a 16-minute drive from the airport, so anyone looking for a hotel in La Oliva, Fuerteventura will find it well placed for exploring the north, including the Malpaís de la Arena.

On the east coast, Caleta de Fuste is the second most popular resort and shares its name with the Castillo de Fuste. Puerto del Rosario, the island's capital-sized town with nearly 36,000 residents, is just 5 minutes from the airport. That makes it practical for short stays rather than a classic beach holiday.

In the south, Costa Calma and Jandía are where you go for the big natural sights: Jandía Natural Park, Cofete beach, Playa del Matorral and the Morro Jable and Punta Jandía lighthouses. Inland, tiny Betancuría, with fewer than 800 residents, sits within the Parque Rural de Betancuria and is about 17 minutes from the airport. It is better as a day out than as a base.

Villas, apartments or resort hotels

Most British travellers here choose between three styles of stay. A hotel with a fixed board basis is the simplest for a beach week. For couples, an adult only hotel in Fuerteventura gives a quieter pool and dining room. Families tend to look for resort hotels with kids' facilities, and Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste and Costa Calma are the resorts most people search when comparing family resorts on Fuerteventura.

If you prefer your own space, villas to rent and apartments suit groups and longer stays, especially if you plan to explore by car. Self catering on Fuerteventura works best near a resort with shops and restaurants within walking distance, such as Corralejo, or with a hire car in quieter spots like El Cotillo. Luxury villas need more homework, so filter the live listings on this page by area first and then by facilities.

I have deliberately not named properties here. The page shows live hotel prices, so you can compare what is actually available for your dates rather than rely on a list that dates quickly.

How to book well

Package holidays, with flight, hotel and transfers together, are the usual way to do this island from the UK, and you can compare package deals from several providers on this page. FUE has direct flights from the UK. Transfers are short to the airport's neighbours: 5 minutes to Puerto del Rosario, 16 minutes to La Oliva and 20 minutes to Tuineje. The southern resorts of Costa Calma and Jandía are a longer journey, so factor that in on an arrival day.

The weather is consistent all year, so prices move with demand rather than sunshine. UK school holidays are the busiest and usually the dearest weeks, so families should book early, while couples gain the most from travelling in term time. Check the board basis carefully: all inclusive suits families who stay put, but if you want to eat out in Corralejo or El Cotillo, bed and breakfast or self catering may serve you better.

If you are staying in a villa or out of town, compare car hire here and collect your car at the airport. Lobos Island, Cofete and Betancuría are all easier with your own wheels, and you can book tours and tickets from the same page.

Questions people ask

Which are the best family resorts in Fuerteventura?

Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste and Costa Calma are the island's most searched-for resorts and the usual family choices. Corralejo has the most going on and Lobos Island offshore. Caleta de Fuste sits on the east coast, while Costa Calma is close to Jandía Natural Park and Playa del Matorral.

What are the best beaches in Fuerteventura?

In the south, Cofete and Playa del Matorral are the standout beaches near Costa Calma, within reach of Jandía Natural Park. In the north, Corralejo Natural Park borders Corralejo, and Lobos Island lies just offshore. Which is best for you depends on where you stay, so choose your base with the beach in mind.

Should I hire a car at Fuerteventura airport?

If you are staying in a villa, in El Cotillo or in the south, a car makes life easier. Cofete, Betancuría and the lighthouses are spread across the island. FUE is 5 minutes from Puerto del Rosario and 16 from La Oliva. You can compare car hire on this page.

Is all inclusive a good idea in Fuerteventura?
