Betancuría is not the Fuerteventura of long beaches and sea-view balconies. It is a village of around 775 people, set inland at 402 metres, about 12 miles from the island's airport. Its appeal is cultural and quiet rather than coastal: the Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura and the church of Santa María de Betancuria sit within a few hundred metres of each other, the Parque Rural de Betancuria surrounds the village, and the Morro Velosa viewpoint lies just over a mile away. The climate follows the island pattern of very little rain and warm days for most of the year, with August reaching around 29°C. For British couples who prefer history and hill scenery to a sunlounger, it makes a rewarding base or day out.

Why go

  • The Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura and Santa María church sit within a few minutes' walk.
  • Morro Velosa viewpoint and the Parque Rural de Betancuria are both barely a mile away.
  • Fuerteventura airport, with direct flights from the UK, is only about 17 minutes' drive.

Museum, Church and Hilltop Views

The village of Betancuria itself is the main draw, a small historic settlement best explored slowly on foot. Right at its heart, about 100 metres from the centre, the Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura covers the island's archaeology and suits families as well as culture-minded couples. A short stroll away, roughly 300 metres, stands the church of Santa María de Betancuria, the village's landmark building.

For nature, the Parque Rural de Betancuria, a protected area, begins about 1.2 miles out, and the Morro Velosa viewpoint, around 1.1 miles from the village, gives a sweeping look over the surrounding hills. If you want the sea, Playa de los Mozos is the nearest listed beach, around 5 miles away.

Where to stay in Betancuría

Staying in the Hills or by the Sea

Betancuría is an inland village rather than a resort, so staying here means peace, cooler evenings at altitude and easy walks to the museum and church, but no beach on the doorstep. It suits couples looking for a calm, culture-focused break more than anyone after nightlife.

Many travellers instead base themselves in a larger coastal town such as Corralejo, Costa Calma or Pájara and visit Betancuría for the day. The page shows live hotel prices so you can compare the village with nearby options.
