Cheap Holidays to Majorca: When and Where to Save in Mallorca

Island · Balearic Islands · Spain

Cheap holidays to Majorca come down to three choices: when you travel, where you stay and how you book. Mallorca has one airport, Palma de Mallorca, with direct flights from the United Kingdom. The resorts of the south-west, such as Palmanova, Magaluf and Santa Ponsa, sit 15 to 20 minutes from the arrivals hall. The island's shoulder months run from autumn through to spring. In April, Palma still reaches around 20°C, and October averages 24°C. That is a long stretch outside the peak summer weeks when a sunny break can cost less. Below, I set out the quieter months, the resorts that tend to be better value and the practical ways to trim the bill.

  • Palmanova is just 15 minutes from Palma de Mallorca airport, so transfers stay short and simple.
  • October in Palma still averages 24°C, which is warm enough for beach days outside peak season.
  • Big resorts like Alcúdia and Cala Millor pair long beaches with sights such as Pollentia and Punta de n'Amer.

Quieter, cheaper months to travel

The shoulder months on Mallorca are February, March, April, September, October, November and December, and these are usually when cheap holidays in Majorca are easiest to find. The best value for weather sits at either end of summer. April averages 20°C in Palma with seven rain days. October averages 24°C with nine, which is still pleasant for the beach and ideal for walking or sightseeing.

September is warm at 28°C, but it is also the wettest month in the records, with around 68mm of rain over ten days. Expect the odd stormy afternoon. November drops to 19°C, and the winter months hover between 15°C and 17°C. Those months suit city breaks in Palma more than sunbathing.

May and June are the island's best months, at 24°C and 29°C, before the 32°C heat of July and August. Late May can be a good compromise if you want summer conditions without the school-holiday premium. Prices across the UK summer holidays and half-terms generally rise, so families gain the most from travelling just before or after those weeks.

Resorts that tend to cost less

Larger, busier resorts with lots of accommodation and short transfers are usually where bargain holidays to Majorca turn up. The Calvià coast west of Palma is the obvious starting point. Palmanova is 15 minutes from the airport, Magaluf 16 and Santa Ponsa 20, which keeps transfer costs and wasted holiday time down. Palmanova has Marineland Mallorca and the Castle of Bendinat close by. Santa Ponsa has the archaeological site of Puig de Sa Morisca above the bay.

On the north coast, Alcúdia is the largest resort town by population. It combines a long seafront with the walled old town and the Roman ruins of Pollentia, while Can Picafort further along the bay is smaller. In the east, Cala Millor sits beside the protected headland of Punta de n'Amer. Nearby Porto Cristo is the base for the Coves del Drach and Coves dels Hams caves. These resorts are further from Palma, so allow for a longer transfer when comparing deals.

Practical ways to spend less

Flexibility saves the most. Midweek departures are often cheaper than Friday and Saturday flights, and flying from a regional UK airport rather than a London one can lower the price of cheap Majorca flights. Check every airport within reasonable reach of home. Booking well ahead tends to help for school-holiday dates, while couples and those free outside term time can sometimes pick up late holiday deals in Majorca in the shoulder months.

Board basis matters as much as the headline price. Self-catering cuts the basic cost and works well in resorts like Palmanova or Alcúdia, which have plenty of places to eat. All-inclusive can work out better value for families who would otherwise eat out three times a day. Package deals to Majorca bundle the flight, hotel and transfer, and UK packages usually come with ATOL protection. You can compare the package deal buttons, hotel prices, car hire and tours and tickets on this page side by side.

Getting there from the UK

Every flight lands at Palma de Mallorca airport (PMI), which has direct flights from the United Kingdom. Most package deals to Mallorca include a coach or private transfer. Palmanova, Magaluf, Calvià and Santa Ponsa are all within about 20 minutes. Northern and eastern resorts such as Alcúdia, Port de Pollença and Cala Millor take noticeably longer, so check the transfer time before you book.

Car hire is worth comparing if you plan day trips to Sóller and its botanic garden, the Far de Formentor lighthouse beyond Port de Pollença, or the caves at Porto Cristo. Mallorca also has ferry ports at Palma and Alcúdia for onward sea crossings.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest time for a holiday to Majorca?

The shoulder months of February to April and September to December are usually better value than summer. April (20°C) and October (24°C) give the best balance of lower demand and good weather, while July and August, at 32°C and coinciding with UK school holidays, are typically the most expensive weeks.

Where can I find the best holiday deals to Majorca?

You can compare package holidays, hotel prices, car hire and tours on this page in one place. Large resorts close to Palma airport, such as Palmanova, Magaluf and Santa Ponsa, often give the widest choice, and travelling midweek from a regional UK airport can help further.

Which is the best place to go in Majorca on a budget?

For short transfers, the Calvià coast suits most budgets: Palmanova is 15 minutes from the airport and Santa Ponsa 20. Alcúdia in the north and Cala Millor in the east are bigger, family-friendly resorts with sights such as Pollentia and Punta de n'Amer nearby.

How long is the transfer from Palma airport to the resorts?

Transfers to the south-west are short: Palmanova takes about 15 minutes, Magaluf 16, Calvià 18 and Santa Ponsa 20. Resorts in the north and east, such as Alcúdia, Port de Pollença and Cala Millor, are further away, so expect a longer coach journey.

Are there good beaches near the cheaper resorts?

Mallorca's main resorts are all coastal, from the Palmanova and Santa Ponsa bays near Palma to Alcúdia and Cala Millor. Near Porto Cristo, Cala Mendia is a well-known beach, and it is close to the Coves del Drach for a day out.
