Where to Stay in Cádiz: Hotels by Area and Bay Town
City · Spain
Working out where to stay in Cádiz starts with the bay rather than the city alone. The old city sits on its own spit of land, with the cathedral, the Roman Theatre and Playa de la Caleta all within a short walk. Around the water lie three more towns: El Puerto de Santa María, San Fernando and Puerto Real, each about 6 miles away. Jerez airport, which has direct flights from the UK, is around 20 to 30 minutes from all four. Below I explain what each base suits, how the seasons shape your stay, and how to compare the live hotel prices on this page.

Cádiz city is the obvious base for a first visit. Most of the headline sights are close together: Cádiz Cathedral, the Roman Theatre, the Iglesia de Santa Cruz, the Arco del Pópulo and the Museum of Cádiz are all within about half a mile of one another, and Playa de la Caleta, guarded by the Castillo de Santa Catalina, is just over a mile away. Playa de la Victoria, about 2.5 miles from the centre, gives the city a long beach of its own, so you can pick between sleeping near the old streets or nearer the sand.
El Puerto de Santa María, around 6 miles across the bay, is the closest of the towns to Jerez airport at about 20 minutes. It has its own landmarks in the Castillo de San Marcos, the House of Vizarrón and the bullring, the Plaza de toros de El Puerto, which makes it a sensible choice if you want a base with character that is slightly away from the city.
San Fernando, also about 6 miles out, borders the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park and is home to Playa de Camposoto and the Panteón de Marinos Ilustres. Puerto Real, the smallest of the four at around 40,000 people, sits about 24 minutes from Jerez airport and suits travellers who want a quieter town and are happy to travel in for sightseeing.
What kind of stay to expect
The four bay towns are working places with populations between roughly 40,000 and 117,000, rather than purpose-built resorts, so think of this as a city-and-town break with beaches attached. In Cádiz the main choice is between the compact historic centre, where you can walk to the cathedral and the Roman Theatre, and the stretch near Playa de la Victoria, which suits a beach-first holiday.
In El Puerto de Santa María, San Fernando and Puerto Real you are trading the old city's density of sights for a different setting: castles and the bullring in El Puerto, the natural park and Camposoto beach near San Fernando. Check each property's exact location on the map before booking, because the bay means a short distance as the crow flies can still mean a drive or a crossing via La Constitución de 1812 Bridge.
Booking your hotel or package
Jerez is the airport to aim for: it has direct flights from the UK and is about 20 minutes from El Puerto de Santa María, 24 from Puerto Real, 28 from Cádiz and 29 from San Fernando. Gibraltar also has direct UK flights but is around 74 minutes by road to San Fernando, so it makes more sense if you plan to hire a car. Many British travellers book a package with flight, hotel and transfer together, and you can compare package deals, hotel prices and car hire on this page.
Timing matters as much as location. April to September is the main stretch, with July and August averaging highs of 29°C to 31°C and almost no rain, and November is still pleasant at around 21°C. October is the wettest month on record here, with about 14 rain days, and March is also damp. Summer weeks during the UK school holidays tend to be in highest demand, so booking early gives you more choice of area.
