City · Spain

Holidays to Cádiz, Spain, give you something unusual on the Andalusian coast: a real working city with beaches inside its walls. The Roman Theatre, the cathedral and Playa de la Caleta all sit within about a mile of each other, and the neighbouring towns of El Puerto de Santa María, San Fernando and Puerto Real ring the bay within 6 miles. Jerez airport, which has direct flights from the UK, is 28 minutes' drive away. Summers peak at 31°C in August, while April and May bring warm days with very little rain. Who this holiday suits

Cádiz works best for travellers who want a city and a beach in the same day. Couples and culture lovers can walk from the Roman Theatre to the Iglesia de Santa Cruz, the Arco del Pópulo and the Museum of Cádiz without needing a car, then finish at Playa de la Caleta beside the Castillo de Santa Catalina. That compact layout is why city breaks in Cádiz, Spain, are so popular: a long weekend covers a great deal.

Families who want more sand have Playa de la Victoria, about 2.5 miles from the centre, and Playa de Camposoto near San Fernando. Walkers and birdwatchers will find the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park on the edge of San Fernando, around 7.5 miles from the city.

Choosing your base around the bay

Cadiz itself, with around 117,000 residents, has the densest concentration of sights: the cathedral, the Roman Theatre, the Convento de Nuestra Señora del Rosario y Santo Domingo and two city beaches. Stay here if you want to step out of the door into history.

El Puerto de Santa María, about 6 miles across the bay, has its own character, with the Castillo de San Marcos, the House of Vizarrón and the Plaza de toros de El Puerto. It is also the closest town to Jerez airport, just 20 minutes away. San Fernando, a similar distance south, suits travellers drawn to the outdoors, with Playa de Camposoto, the natural park and the Panteón de Marinos Ilustres.

Puerto Real is the smallest of the four, with around 40,000 residents and fewer listed sights, which makes it the quieter choice for those happy to drive or catch transport into the city. The La Constitución de 1812 Bridge links the city to the far shore of the bay.

When to book

The best months are April to September, plus November. April and May are my pick for sightseeing: highs of 23°C to 24°C with only three or four rain days. July and August are the hottest and driest, at 29°C to 31°C with barely any rain, ideal for beach weeks but also the period when school-holiday demand pushes package prices up, so booking early is sensible.

September stays warm at 27°C. October is the wettest month by far, with around 14 rain days, so avoid it for a beach trip. November returns to a mild 21°C and drier conditions, good for short breaks to Cádiz, Spain, while winter days hover around 17°C to 18°C.

Getting there from the UK

Jerez (XRY) is the airport to aim for. It has direct flights from the UK, and transfers are short: about 20 minutes to El Puerto de Santa María, 24 to Puerto Real, 28 to Cadiz and 29 to San Fernando.

Gibraltar (GIB) also has direct UK flights, but the transfer to San Fernando takes around 74 minutes, so it makes most sense if the flight times suit you better. Cádiz has its own ferry port, and the ports of Tarifa and Algeciras lie roughly 46 and 48 miles away if you plan onward travel by sea.
