What kind of place this is

Cádiz is a working city of around 117,000 people rather than a purpose-built resort, and that is its appeal. The old town packs Cádiz Cathedral, the Museum of Cádiz, the Roman Theatre, the Iglesia de Santa Cruz and the Arco del Pópulo into a compact grid you can cover on foot, with the Castillo de Santa Catalina guarding the seafront and the cable-stayed Constitución de 1812 Bridge carrying traffic across the bay.

It is also a beach city. Playa de la Caleta lies tucked between the old fortifications, while Playa de la Victoria runs along the newer side of town. Further south, San Fernando gives access to Playa de Camposoto and the wetlands of the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park, so a week here can mix sightseeing, sand and a little nature without long drives.

Choosing a base around the bay

Cádiz itself is the obvious choice if you want history on the doorstep: the bulk of the area's sights are here, along with two city beaches. Across the water, El Puerto de Santa María, about six miles away, has its own landmarks in the Castillo de San Marcos, the bullring and the House of Vizarrón, and it is the closest town to Jerez airport.

San Fernando, also around six miles from Cádiz, is the place for Playa de Camposoto, the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park and the Panteón de Marinos Ilustres. Puerto Real is the smallest of the four, a quieter option on the inner bay that still puts you within easy reach of everything else. All four are coastal and all have tours and activities you can browse on this page.

When to go, month by month

April to September is the main window. April averages 23°C with only three rainy days, May reaches 24°C, and June climbs to 27°C. July and August are the hottest and driest months, with highs of 29°C and 31°C, lows in the low twenties and roughly one rainy day each. September eases back to 27°C, though showers start to return.

October is the month to be wary of: it is the wettest of the year, with about 185mm of rain over 14 days, even though highs still reach 24°C. November recovers well, with 21°C and around six rainy days, which makes it a good late-season choice. From December to February expect highs of 17°C to 18°C, mild by British standards, while March can be surprisingly wet with ten rainy days.

Getting there from the UK

Jerez (XRY) is the nearest airport with direct flights from the UK. Drive times are short: about 20 minutes to El Puerto de Santa María, 24 minutes to Puerto Real, 28 minutes to Cádiz and 29 minutes to San Fernando. Gibraltar (GIB) also has direct UK flights, but the road journey to San Fernando takes about 74 minutes, so it suits travellers planning to tour the coast.

Cádiz has its own ferry port, and Tarifa and Algeciras, around 46 and 48 miles away, are the departure points further along the coast. If you want to explore beyond the bay, you can compare car hire here.

What you can book here

Most British travellers book this stretch of coast as a package: return flights, usually into Jerez, a hotel and the airport transfer in one booking. With transfers of under half an hour to any of the four towns, you lose very little of your first day. Packages typically offer a choice of board basis, from room only to half board or all inclusive, and prices rise in the school holidays, so July and August fill up first while late spring and November tend to be calmer.

On this page you can compare package deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach, check hotel prices, see tours and tickets for the cathedral, castles and bay, and compare car hire for day trips.
