Do you actually need a car?
For a short city break, probably not. Cádiz's main sights are clustered tightly together. The Roman Theatre, Iglesia de Santa Cruz and the Arco del Pópulo are all within roughly half a mile of the centre, and Playa de la Caleta and Castillo de Santa Catalina are only about a mile further. On foot, a car would mostly sit parked.
A car earns its keep once you want to see the rest of the bay. The Castillo de San Marcos and the House of Vizarrón are in El Puerto de Santa María, about 6 miles away. The Panteón de Marinos Ilustres is in San Fernando, and the wide sands of Playa de Camposoto lie about 7 miles out. If you plan to stay in one of these neighbouring towns, or to hop between beaches, car rental in Cádiz, Spain makes the holiday far more flexible.
A sensible middle ground is to hire for only part of your stay. Spend the city days on foot, then pick up a car for the days you head out around the bay.
Where to pick up your car
Jerez (XRY) is the obvious choice. It has direct flights from the UK and is close to everything around the bay. From the terminal it is about 20 minutes to El Puerto de Santa María, 24 to Puerto Real, 28 to Cádiz itself and 29 to San Fernando. Collecting at the airport means you avoid a separate transfer and can drive straight to your hotel.
Gibraltar (GIB) also has direct UK flights, but it is further away. San Fernando is about 74 minutes by road, and Cádiz itself is a little beyond that. This option suits travellers combining Cádiz with the southern tip of Andalusia.
If you would rather not drive on arrival, you could collect a car in the city partway through your trip. The comparison on this page shows the options for each pick-up point.
Driving around the bay
Distances here are short. The four towns of the bay, Cádiz, El Puerto de Santa María, San Fernando and Puerto Real, all lie within about 6 miles of one another. The La Constitución de 1812 Bridge, a cable-stayed crossing around 2 miles from the old town, is one of the links between the city and the mainland side of the bay.
Longer drives open up too. The ferry ports at Tarifa and Algeciras are about 46 and 48 miles away, handy for a day trip by sea. Summer is hot and dry, with highs of 31°C in August, so pack water and plan beach runs for the morning. October is the wettest month, with around 185 mm of rain over 14 days, so allow extra time on the roads.
As in the rest of Spain, you drive on the right, so take a moment to adjust when leaving the airport.
Booking tips before you go
Choose a full-to-full fuel policy. You collect the car with a full tank and return it full, paying only for the fuel you use. Check the excess on the standard insurance too, and decide before you reach the desk whether you want cover to reduce it. Reading the terms at home is far easier than in an airport queue.
If you are travelling with children, reserve child seats when you book rather than on arrival. Book early for the busiest months. April to September and November are the best times to visit, and July and August coincide with UK school holidays, when demand is highest. Use the live comparison on this page to weigh up suppliers, fuel policies and pick-up points side by side.
