Torrevieja Holidays: Beaches, Weather and Getting There
Resort · Costa Blanca · Spain
Torrevieja holidays suit British travellers who want a proper working town by the sea rather than a purpose-built strip. This Costa Blanca resort is home to around 82,600 people, and its beaches sit close to the centre: Playa del Cura and Playa de Los Naufragos are each about half a mile away. Between swims you can climb aboard Delfín, a 1972 submarine moored as a museum, or visit the Museo del Mar y de la Sal. Summer brings highs of 31°C, winter days still reach 18°C, and two airports with direct flights from the UK are under 40 minutes' drive away.

What kind of place it is
Torrevieja is a sizeable coastal town on the southern Costa Blanca, with a population of roughly 82,600. That matters for a holiday: there is a real town around you all year, not just a seasonal resort that closes its shutters in winter.
The sea defines the place. Beaches run along the shore within a couple of miles of the centre, and the town's two best-known museums both look to the water: Delfín, a decommissioned 1972 Daphné-class submarine, and the Museo del Mar y de la Sal, devoted to the sea and to salt.
Beaches and sights around town
Torrevieja is a single resort rather than a cluster of villages, so the choice is really about which stretch of coast you base yourself near. Playa del Cura and Playa de Los Naufragos are the closest to the centre, about half a mile out, handy if you like to stroll to the sand and back to town for lunch.
Further along, Playa del Acequión is around a mile from the centre, while Playa Cesped La Veleta and the small cove of Cala de la Higuera are roughly two miles away, worth the walk or short drive for a change of scene.
For a rainy hour or a break from the sun, the Museo del Mar y de la Sal sits right in the centre, and the Delfín submarine is about half a mile away.
When to go for sun
July and August are the hottest months, with daytime highs of 31°C and nights around 23 to 24°C, and almost no rain: July sees only about 4 mm. June is a touch gentler at 27°C. If you prefer warmth without the peak heat, March, April, October and November are among the best months, with highs between 21°C and 26°C.
May and September are the months to watch for showers. May averages 68 mm of rain over nine days and September 51 mm, also over nine days, so pack a light layer. Winter is mild by British standards, with January and December reaching 18°C by day and dropping to about 9°C at night, which makes a winter-sun week perfectly realistic.
Getting there from the UK
Two airports serve Torrevieja, and both have direct flights from the United Kingdom. Alicante is the closer, about 31 minutes by road, and Murcia is around 38 minutes away. Either way the transfer is short enough that you can be on the beach the afternoon you land.
If you are driving down from Britain via the ferry, the nearest port listed is Dénia, about 74 miles up the coast. Car hire is easy to compare on this page if you would rather explore the wider Costa Blanca under your own steam.
Booking your package or hotel
Most British travellers book Torrevieja as a package holiday: return flights from a UK airport, a hotel and the transfer from Alicante or Murcia bundled together. In practice that means the half-hour drive is arranged for you, and you choose a board basis that suits you, from self-catering or bed and breakfast through to half board or all inclusive. Prices rise during UK school holidays, so travelling just outside them usually gives more choice.
On this page you can compare live package deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach, check hotel prices if you would rather book separately, see tours and tickets for things to do locally, and compare car hire.

Questions people ask
Which airport is closest to Torrevieja?
Alicante is the closest, about 31 minutes' drive from Torrevieja. Murcia is the alternative at around 38 minutes. Both airports have direct flights from the United Kingdom, so you can pick whichever suits your departure airport and flight times.
What is the best month to visit Torrevieja?
For hot beach weather, July and August reach 31°C with very little rain. For milder sightseeing weather, March, April, October and November are among the best months, with highs of 21°C to 26°C. May and September tend to be the wettest.
Is Torrevieja warm enough for a winter holiday?
It is mild rather than hot. January and December average daytime highs of 18°C, with nights around 9°C and only about two rainy days a month. That is comfortable for walking, museums and seafront lunches, though most people will find the sea too cool for long swims.
Are there beaches close to the town centre?
Yes. Playa del Cura and Playa de Los Naufragos are each about half a mile from the centre. Playa del Acequión is roughly a mile away, and Playa Cesped La Veleta and Cala de la Higuera about two miles out.
What is there to do apart from the beach?
The two main sights are Delfín, a 1972 Daphné-class submarine you can visit as a museum, and the Museo del Mar y de la Sal in the town centre, dedicated to the sea and salt. You can also browse tours and tickets for the area on this page.
