Nerja Spain Weather: Month by Month Guide to the Climate

Resort · Costa del Sol · Spain

The Nerja Spain weather pattern is easy to like: mild winters, warm springs and a hot, almost rainless high summer on the eastern edge of the Costa del Sol. Daytime highs sit around 18°C from December to February and climb to 33°C in July, while nights in January still average 10°C. Rain arrives in short bursts rather than long spells, with March and October the months to watch. What the climate is like

Nerja weather follows a clear rhythm. Summer runs hot and dry, with July and August the warmest months at 33°C and 32°C and overnight lows of 25°C. Winter is gentle rather than cold: January, February and December all average highs of 18°C, with lows between 10°C and 11°C. The coolest stretch is January, and even then a sunny lunch on the Balcón de Europa is perfectly realistic.

The best months, by the averages, are April, May, June, September and November, when the heat is manageable and rainy days are few. January, February, March, October and December are the shoulder months: still mild, but with a higher chance of a wet day. If you are weighing up a 14-day or 30-day forecast for a trip some way off, remember that longer-range outlooks are rough guides at best, so the monthly pattern here is the safer basis for booking.

Both Málaga airport, about 50 minutes' drive away, and Granada airport, about 43 minutes away, have direct flights from the UK, and you can compare package holidays, hotel prices and car hire on this page.

Month by month through the year

Winter and early spring are mild but mixed. January and February bring around 33mm to 37mm of rain over four or five days, and December is drier still at 14mm. March is the wettest month of the year by volume, with 140mm falling across eight days, so anyone checking Nerja weather in March should expect a few grey spells between bright, 21°C afternoons. Nerja weather in April is a different story: highs of 23°C, just 19mm of rain and only three wet days, which makes it one of the most reliable spring months.

May reaches 24°C, though rain falls on around seven days, usually lightly at 26mm in total. June warms to 28°C with lows of 21°C. July is the driest and hottest month, with 1mm of rain on a single day, and August is barely different at 32°C and two wet days. This is when the Nerja temperature is at its peak and the beaches are at their busiest.

September eases to 27°C with four rainy days. Nerja weather in October turns more unsettled: highs of 24°C remain pleasant, but 101mm of rain across ten days makes it the month with the most wet days. November then settles again, with 22°C highs, 23mm of rain and, on average, just one wet day.

What to pack by season

From June to September, pack light cotton clothing, a sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream; with highs of 28°C to 33°C and warm nights, you will rarely need more than a thin layer after dark. Comfortable sandals work for the promenade and the beaches, from Playa de la Torrecilla to Playa de Burriana, both around half a mile from the centre.

In spring and autumn, add a light jumper or jacket for evenings, when lows drop to between 13°C and 18°C. A compact umbrella or rain jacket earns its place in March and October, the two wettest months. Sturdy walking shoes are worth bringing at any time if you plan to explore the steep streets of Frigiliana, about 3 miles away, or the trails of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, about 6 miles inland.

For December to February, think layers: days around 18°C feel warm in the sun, but nights of 10°C to 11°C call for a proper jacket or fleece.

What to pack for Nerja in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 24°C by day and 18°C at night.
  • A light rain jacket: about 10 rainy days in October.
