The sights worth your time

If you only have a few days, these are the Nerja attractions to prioritise. Start at the Balcón de Europa, the observation point in the heart of town, then walk down to the sea: Playa de Burriana, Playa de la Calahonda and Playa del Carabeo are each about half a mile away. The Cueva de Nerja, a cave known well beyond southern Spain, is roughly two miles east and is the obvious half-day outing.

Inland, Frigiliana is listed among Spain's beautiful villages and sits about three miles from Nerja. Beyond it, the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, some five and a half miles away, gives the coast its mountain backdrop. Together they answer the question of what to see in Nerja better than any single landmark.

Town, coast and hill village

Nerja town itself has the densest cluster of things to see in Nerja. Around the centre you have the Balcón de Europa and the closest beaches: Burriana, Calahonda, Carabeo, Torrecilla and Playa El Salón, all within about half a mile. A little further, Playa de Salón and El Playazo are roughly a mile out, the latter running west of town.

Heading east along the coast towards Maro, the cave comes first, then La Caleta de Maro at about two miles, Playa de Maro at around two and a half miles, and Playa de las Alberquillas near four miles. These are the beaches to aim for if you want to go beyond the town strands, and car hire makes hopping between them simple.

Frigiliana, about three miles inland, is the classic day trip from Nerja, though it is close enough for a morning. Its sights include the Castillo de Frigiliana and the Palacio de los Condes de Frigiliana, and the village is the gateway to the natural park. For longer day trips from Nerja, Spain, Granada lies within reach, its airport only around 40 minutes from Frigiliana.

Days out with children

Families have the advantage that so many of the beaches are a short walk from the centre, so there is no need for long journeys with buckets and spades. Burriana, Calahonda and Torrecilla are all about half a mile away, and the Balcón de Europa is right in town for an evening stroll.

The Cueva de Nerja, around two miles out, is the easiest headline outing to fit around beach time with younger children. Bear in mind that July and August reach highs of 32 to 33°C, so plan the walk up to Frigiliana or into the natural park for the morning, and keep afternoons for the sea.

Booking tours, tickets and car hire

You can browse tours and tickets for Nerja on this page, along with car hire and hotel prices, so it is worth checking what runs during your dates, including whether a boat trip from Nerja is on offer. Package holidays from the UK fly into Granada, around 43 minutes from Nerja by road, or Málaga, about 50 minutes, and you can compare package deals here too.

For timing, April, May, June, September and November are the best months: warm, from 22 to 28°C, without the peak-summer heat. Avoid counting on March and October for pure beach weather, as they are the wettest months, with October seeing around ten rainy days. School holidays push demand up, so book earlier if you travel then.
