What kind of place it is

Nerja is a mid-sized coastal town rather than a high-rise strip, and its appeal is the coastline itself: a string of coves and longer beaches running east and west of the centre. Playa de Burriana, Playa del Carabeo, Playa de la Calahonda, Playa El Salón and Playa de la Torrecilla are all around a mile from the middle of town, while El Playazo lies about a mile further out. The Balcón de Europa, an observation point over the sea, is the natural place to start an evening stroll.

There is plenty to do in Nerja beyond the sand. The Cueva de Nerja, a cave about 2 miles from town, is the best-known sight, and behind the coast rises the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, a protected area roughly 6 miles away that suits walkers wanting a break from the beach.

Nerja town or Frigiliana

Most British travellers stay in Nerja itself, where the beaches, the Balcón de Europa and the town's restaurants are all walkable. Head east and the coast becomes quieter: La Caleta de Maro is about 2 miles out, Playa de Maro around 2.5 miles, and Playa de las Alberquillas nearly 4 miles, which makes these the beaches to seek out if you prefer fewer people around you.

Frigiliana, a village of about 2,500 people some 2.5 to 3 miles inland, is the other option. It is listed among Spain's beautiful villages and has the Castillo de Frigiliana and the Palacio de los Condes de Frigiliana within its streets. It works as a quieter base for those with car hire, or as an easy half-day out from the coast.

Best months for sunshine

The sweet spots are April, May, June, September and November. April brings highs of 23°C with just three rainy days, June reaches 28°C, September holds at 27°C and November is a pleasant surprise at 22°C with typically a single wet day. July and August are the hottest months, peaking at 33°C and 32°C with almost no rain, which suits sun-seekers but can feel heavy for sightseeing.

Winter stays mild, with highs of 18°C from December to February, so a winter break is realistic. The months to watch are March, the wettest of the year at around 140 mm, and October, with roughly 101 mm spread over ten rainy days. A short-range forecast is worth checking then, but the pattern above is what to plan around.

Getting there from the UK

Two airports have direct flights from the UK. Granada is the closer by road, around 43 minutes to Nerja and 40 minutes to Frigiliana. Málaga, with the wider choice of routes, is about 50 minutes to Nerja and 49 minutes to Frigiliana.

On a package holiday the transfer from either airport is usually included, so you land, collect your bags and are driven to the hotel. If you would rather explore the natural park, Frigiliana and the beaches east of Maro at your own pace, car hire from the airport gives you that freedom. For travellers arriving by sea, Motril port is around 20 miles away and Málaga port about 30 miles.

Booking your package

A package bundles your flight, hotel and transfer into one booking, and you choose the board basis, from room only to half board or all inclusive. On this page you can compare live deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach side by side. Expect prices to rise during UK school holidays, so the shoulder weeks of May, June and September are worth comparing.

You can also check hotel prices if you are booking flights separately, compare car hire for days out to Frigiliana, and see tours and tickets for the Cueva de Nerja and the surrounding area, all from the buttons on this page.
