Marbella Villa Holidays and Hotels: Where to Stay

Resort · Costa del Sol · Spain

Marbella villa holidays work best when you choose the area before the property. The town itself is a large coastal place of more than 150,000 people, with beaches such as Playa de Venus and Playa del Faro a short walk from the Castillo de Marbella. Behind it, the hill villages of Ojén and Istán sit a few miles inland beneath Sierra Blanca. Málaga airport, with direct flights from the UK, is about 34 minutes' drive away, and Gibraltar about 51. Below, I set out where to stay, what kind of accommodation suits each spot, and how to book. You can compare live hotel prices and package deals on this page.

Where to base yourself

Marbella town is the obvious base if you want to walk to the sea and to dinner. The Castillo de Marbella, Casa del Corregidor and Hospital Bazán are all in or near the centre, and the town beaches, Playa de Venus, Playa del Faro, Playa de la Fontanilla and Playa del Cable, lie between half a mile and just over a mile away. The lighthouse is close by too. Further east, Playa de Cabopino is about 8 miles out, worth knowing if you would rather stay somewhere quieter along the coast.

Ojén, about 4 miles inland, is a small village of around 2,300 people with its own castle and Sierra Blanca on the doorstep. It is the closest of the three to Málaga airport, at around 30 minutes' drive. Istán, roughly 6 miles inland and smaller still at under 1,500 residents, is about 37 minutes from Málaga. Both suit travellers who prefer hills and space over a seafront, and who are happy to drive down to the beach.

What kind of stay suits you

Most British travellers looking here want a villa, and the choice splits neatly by area. In and around the town, expect hotels and apartments within reach of the beaches, which suits couples and anyone after self catering in Marbella without needing a car every day. If you are searching for Marbella adults only hotels or a 5 star stay, the town is where to focus, and you can filter the live hotel prices on this page accordingly.

For Marbella villas for rent with more room and privacy, the inland villages of Ojén and Istán are the natural fit: small populations, mountain views towards Sierra Blanca and a quieter pace. Luxury villas in Marbella to rent are worth weighing against family resorts closer to the sand; with children, being able to walk to Playa de la Fontanilla or Playa de Venus can matter more than a larger garden. Whichever you choose, factor in car hire if you stay inland, which you can also compare here.

When and how to book

April, May, June, July, September and November are the best months. July and August are the hottest, at 31°C and 32°C, and almost dry, which is when villa pools earn their keep. April is a pleasant 22°C with just two rain days. October is the wettest month, with around 115mm of rain over nine days, and March is also damp, so pack accordingly if you travel then.

If you prefer Marbella flights and hotel in one booking, a package bundles the flight, accommodation and often transfers, with a choice of board basis from room only to half board or more. Fly into Málaga for the shortest transfer, around 34 minutes to town, or Gibraltar at about 51. UK school holidays push demand up in summer and at half term, so book early for those dates. The deal buttons on this page let you compare Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach side by side.
