Car Rental Marbella: Hiring a Car on the Costa del Sol

Resort · Costa del Sol · Spain

Planning car rental in Marbella usually starts with a simple question: how much of the Costa del Sol do you want to see beyond your sunbed? Marbella itself is walkable around the old town, where the Castillo de Marbella, Casa del Corregidor and Playa de la Fontanilla sit within a mile or so of each other. But the white villages of Ojén and Istán lie inland in the hills, Sierra Blanca rises behind the town, and Playa de Cabopino is about 8 miles along the coast. Málaga airport is roughly 34 minutes away by road and Gibraltar about 51, both with direct flights from the UK. This page explains when a car earns its keep, where to collect one and what to check before you sign.

Airports for Marbella

Málaga (AGP), Gibraltar (GIB) and Seville (SVQ) have direct flights from the UK, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, London Luton and Manchester.

Do you need a car here

If your holiday is mostly beach and old town, probably not every day. Playa de Venus, Playa del Faro and the Marbella Lighthouse are all around a mile from the centre, and the castle, the Hospital Bazán, the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo and the Museo del Bonsái are close together on foot.

A car starts to make sense once you look further out. Sierra Blanca and the castle at Ojén are about 4 miles away, Istán about 6, the King Abdelaziz Mosque around 2.5 miles and the King Fahd Mosque about 3. Playa de Cabopino, roughly 8 miles from town, is the beach most people drive to. For a fortnight with a few day trips, car hire in Marbella for part of the stay is often the most flexible option.

If you only need to get from the airport to your hotel, a package with transfers or a taxi from Málaga to Marbella may suit you better than a car parked unused for a week. The taxi from Málaga to Marbella price varies, so check before you travel rather than relying on old figures.

Where to collect your car

Most British travellers collect at Málaga (AGP), which has direct flights from the UK. From the terminal it is around 30 minutes to Ojén, 34 minutes to Marbella and 37 minutes to Istán, so you can be at your accommodation well within the hour. When people search for Marbella airport car hire, this is generally the airport they mean.

Gibraltar (GIB) is the other option with direct UK flights. The drive is longer, about 51 minutes to Marbella, 53 to Istán and 56 to Ojén, but it can work if the flight times suit you better.

You can also hire in town once you have settled in, which is handy if you want a car only for two or three days of exploring. The comparison on this page shows car hire at the airport and in Marbella side by side.

Driving the coast and hills

Along the coast the distances are short: the old town, the lighthouse and the beaches cluster within a couple of miles, so parking rather than driving tends to be the challenge. Heading inland is different. Ojén and Istán sit in the hills beneath Sierra Blanca, a protected mountain area, so expect climbing roads and bends rather than straight runs.

Weather matters too. July is typically dry with highs around 31°C and August around 32°C, so a car left in the sun gets very hot; shade and plenty of water help. October is the wettest month, with about 115 mm of rain over nine days, and March is also wet, so allow extra time on slippery hill roads then.

If you fancy a longer outing, the ferry ports at Málaga (about 26 miles), Algeciras (about 41 miles) and Tarifa (about 53 miles) are all within reach, though check your hire terms before taking a car anywhere by sea.

Booking your hire car

Choose a full-to-full fuel policy where you can, so you pay only for what you use. Read the excess carefully and decide whether to take cover, and check what it actually includes, such as tyres, glass and the underside of the car. If you are travelling with children, reserve child seats in advance and confirm the sizes.

The main summer weeks and UK school holidays push demand up, so booking early gives you more choice. Anyone looking for cheap car rental in Marbella should compare several suppliers rather than take the first quote, and the same goes for cheap car hire for a short in-town rental.

Marbella also attracts interest in something special: luxury car hire in Marbella and sports car hire are both searched for, and the same checks on excess, deposit and fuel apply.
