Cheap Holidays to Marbella: When to Go and How to Save

Resort · Costa del Sol · Spain

Finding cheap holidays to Marbella comes down to timing and a little flexibility. This is the largest town on its stretch of the Costa del Sol, home to around 156,000 people, with an old quarter around the Castillo de Marbella, a run of town beaches and the Sierra Blanca rising behind. Málaga airport sits about 34 minutes away by road, and Gibraltar about 51, both with direct flights from the UK. Below, I set out the quieter months worth considering, where to base yourself, the simple habits that keep costs down and how the transfers work. You can compare package holidays, hotel prices, tours and car hire on this page.

Quieter months that cost less

The shoulder months in Marbella are January, February, March, October and December, when demand from British families drops and package deals to Marbella tend to be easier to find. Winter is mild rather than hot: January and February both average highs of 17°C, December 18°C, with lows around 10 to 11°C. That suits walking the old town, the Sierra Blanca and the museums more than lying on the sand.

March and October are the two wettest months on the record, with 104mm and 115mm of rain respectively, and October brings around nine rain days. The upside is that October still averages 24°C. November is worth a look too: it is listed among the better months, with highs of 21°C and only two rain days, and it falls outside the school holidays.

July and August are the hottest, at 31°C and 32°C with almost no rain, and they coincide with the long school break, which is when prices for any UK family holiday generally climb. If you can travel in term time, April (22°C, two rain days) and May (24°C) offer warm weather before the summer peak.

Where to stay for value

Marbella town is the obvious base for cheap holidays in Marbella. As by far the largest place in the area, it has the widest spread of accommodation, and it has the shortest transfer from Málaga. Staying near the centre puts the castle, Casa del Corregidor, Hospital Bazán, the Marbella Lighthouse and beaches such as Playa del Faro and Playa del Cable all within about a mile, so you can manage without a car for much of the stay.

Many people searching for cheap holidays to Marbella and Puerto Banús are really looking at the same coastline; the town itself is usually the simpler starting point when comparing options.

Inland, Ojén (about 4 miles away) and Istán (about 6 miles) are small mountain villages of a couple of thousand people or fewer. They are quiet and close to the Sierra Blanca, and Ojén has its own castle, but expect fewer places to stay and plan on car hire to reach the beach.

Simple ways to spend less

Package holidays, bundling flight, hotel and transfers, are how most British travellers book this coast, and comparing cheap package holidays to Marbella side by side is the quickest way to see what a given week really costs. This page shows live Marbella holiday deals from several package providers, alongside hotel prices if you would rather arrange things yourself.

Flexibility helps more than anything. Midweek departures are often better value than Friday or Saturday flights, and checking a regional UK airport near you rather than only the London airports can widen the choice. Booking well ahead for school holidays, or watching for late deals to Marbella in the shoulder months, are the two usual approaches.

Self-catering keeps daily spending down, and a free day can be spent on the town beaches, the Marbella Lighthouse or a walk in the Sierra Blanca. Cheap weekend breaks to Marbella are realistic too, given how short the airport transfer is.

Getting there from the UK

Two airports have direct flights from the UK. Málaga (AGP) is the main one, with a drive of about 34 minutes to Marbella, 30 minutes to Ojén and 37 minutes to Istán. Gibraltar (GIB) is the alternative, roughly 51 minutes from Marbella, and is worth checking when comparing cheap deals to Marbella from different UK airports.

Package holidays include the transfer, so you are met at arrivals. If you prefer independence, you can compare car hire here, which is useful for the inland villages. For travellers arriving by sea, the nearest ferry ports are Málaga (about 26 miles), Algeciras (about 41 miles) and Tarifa (about 53 miles).
