What kind of place this is

Costa Adeje is the stretch of coast in southern Tenerife where you go for beaches and sunshine. Playa del Duque sits within a mile of the seafront. Playa de las Vistas, Honda Beach and Playa de Los Cristianos are about 2.5 miles away, and quieter Playa de Ajabo and Playa Las Galgas lie further along towards Adeje. Plenty of travellers come for winter sun, but the resort works as a summer holiday too.

The daytime entertainment is mostly outdoors. Siam Park, the island's best-known water park, is about a mile away, and Aqualand Costa Adeje is closer still. Monkey Park is around 3 miles off and Golf Las Américas about 2. If you want walking rather than water slides, the protected gorge of Barranco del Infierno is roughly 4 miles inland, above Adeje. The Malpaís de la Rasca nature reserve and Punta Rasca Lighthouse are a short drive south-east.

Which base suits you

Playa de las Américas is about a mile from Costa Adeje and feels like an extension of it. Most of the nearby sights and beaches are listed under its name, including Siam Park, Playa de las Vistas and Golf Las Américas. It is also the closest stop to the airport, which makes it the easy choice if you want everything within walking distance or a short taxi ride.

Adeje is the municipal town, about 2.5 miles away, with a population of over 43,000. It is the starting point for Barranco del Infierno, and the beaches of Playa de Ajabo and Playa Las Galgas are nearby. Choose it if you want a base that feels more like a working town than a holiday strip.

When to go

Almost every month is a good month here. Highs run from 20°C in February to 28°C in August. Nights rarely drop below 13°C, and from June to November they stay at 18°C or above. July is the driest month on record, with no measurable rain, and August averages a single wet day. February is the shoulder month, with the most rain days (six) and the coolest temperatures. March has the highest rainfall total of the year, though it still manages highs of 22°C.

Costa Adeje at Christmas is a popular choice for British families escaping winter. December averages highs of 21°C, lows of 15°C and around four rain days. Expect UK school holidays, Christmas included, to push package prices up, so book early if your dates are fixed.

Getting there from the UK

Tenerife South (TFS) is the airport to fly into. It has direct flights from the United Kingdom, and the transfer takes about 14 minutes to Playa de las Américas and 15 minutes to Adeje. On a package holiday, that short hop is usually the shared or private transfer included in your booking.

Tenerife North (TFN) has no direct UK flights. It is about 48 minutes from Adeje and 53 minutes from Playa de las Américas, so it only makes sense if you are connecting from elsewhere. Los Cristianos ferry port, about a mile away, links the south coast with the other Canary Islands, including Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Booking your package and extras

Most British visitors book a package holiday, with flights to Tenerife South, a hotel and the airport transfer sold together. On this page you can compare package deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach side by side. Check the board basis on each offer, from room only to all inclusive, because it changes the total cost of a week or a fortnight more than you might expect.

If you prefer to arrange things yourself, you can check hotel prices and compare car hire from the same page. A car is handy for Barranco del Infierno, the Malpaís de la Rasca or the north of the island. Tours and tickets, including water park entry, are listed here too, so you can sort the days out before you fly.
