Where to Stay in Madrid: Areas and Hotel Styles Compared

City · Spain

Working out where to stay in Madrid is mostly a question of distance. The capital spreads across a city of more than three million people, and almost everything British visitors come for (the Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofía, the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral) sits within about half a mile to a mile of the centre. Around it lie smaller towns such as Leganés, Las Rozas de Madrid, San Sebastián de los Reyes and Pinto, all between 7 and 12 miles out. Madrid airport has direct flights from the UK and is about 12 minutes from the city by car, so even a short break works well. You can compare live hotel prices for each area on this page.

Which area suits your trip

For a first visit, the centre of Madrid is the obvious base. The Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, the Convent of Las Descalzas Reales and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando are all within about half a mile, and the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Royal Botanic Garden form a close cluster around a mile away. Staying centrally means you can walk most days and head back for a rest in the July heat, when afternoons reach 34°C. Slightly further out, the Sorolla Museum and the Temple of Debod are about a mile away, while Las Ventas bullring and the Palace of Moncloa sit around 2.5 miles from the centre.

If you would rather stay outside the city, four towns ring the capital. San Sebastián de los Reyes, about 11 miles north, is only around 7 minutes from the airport, which suits late arrivals or an early flight home. Leganés, about 7 miles south-west, and Las Rozas de Madrid, around 11 miles north-west, are each roughly 22 minutes from the airport. Pinto, around 12 miles south, is the furthest of the group and the smallest town.

What kind of stay to expect

Madrid is an inland city rather than a beach resort, so think city hotels instead of all-inclusive pool complexes. In the centre you are choosing between places to sleep close to the museums and palaces, where location matters more than facilities, and you will spend your days out on foot.

The surrounding towns are far smaller than the capital, from around 190,000 people in Leganés down to about 43,000 in Pinto, and they appeal more as practical bases than as destinations in themselves. Staying out there makes most sense if you have car hire, want to be near the airport, or plan day trips. The live listings on this page show what is currently available in each area, so you can compare styles side by side.

When and how to book

May, June and September are the most comfortable months, with highs of 25°C in May, 30°C in June and 27°C in September, so expect these to be popular. July and August are the hottest and driest, with only one or two rain days but highs of 33 to 34°C, which makes air conditioning and a central location worth prioritising. March, April, October and November are milder shoulder months, though they bring eight or nine rain days, and winter days hover around 10 to 13°C with chilly nights near freezing.

Many British travellers book Madrid as a city break package with flights from the UK and a hotel together; you can compare deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach here, alongside hotel-only prices, tours and tickets for the big museums, and car hire if you plan to stay in one of the outer towns. Prices tend to rise over UK school holidays, so travelling outside them usually gives you more choice.
