Madrid City Breaks: Package Holidays, Weather and Airports

City · Spain

Madrid city breaks are about art, palaces and long evenings rather than beaches, and the Spanish capital is unusually easy to reach from the UK. Direct flights land at Madrid airport, roughly a 12-minute drive from the city, so a Friday arrival leaves the whole weekend free. Within a mile or so of the centre sit the Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofía, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Royal Palace of Madrid. The weather sets the rhythm: May, June and September are the sweet spot, high summer pushes past 33°C, and winter days are cool at around 10 to 13°C. Below, I explain how a package works here and where you can compare live deals.

Who this city suits

Madrid holidays reward travellers who like to walk between great collections. The Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum are all around a mile from the centre, and smaller treasures such as the Sorolla Museum and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando fill the gaps. Couples on a Madrid weekend break can comfortably pair one big museum a day with the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral and the Convent of Las Descalzas Reales.

Families may prefer to mix museums with open spaces: the Royal Botanic Garden of Madrid is close to the Prado, and the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian temple, is about a mile and a quarter out. This is a city holiday, not a beach one, so it suits those who want culture and food over sunbeds.

Where to base yourself

Most short breaks to Madrid are spent in the city itself, where nearly all the major sights lie within about a mile of the centre. Staying central means you can walk from the Royal Palace to the Prado and save transport for outliers such as Las Ventas bullring or the Palace of Moncloa, both around two and a half miles away.

If you want somewhere quieter, the surrounding towns are close. San Sebastián de los Reyes is about 11 miles from the centre and just 7 minutes from the airport, handy for late arrivals. Leganés lies around 7 miles out, Las Rozas de Madrid about 11 miles and Pinto roughly 12 miles. They are residential towns rather than holiday quarters, so for a first holiday in Madrid the centre is the natural choice.

July and August are hot, with highs of 34°C and 33°C and barely any rain, which makes long museum mornings and late evenings the sensible pattern.

The shoulder months of March, April, October and November are cooler, from 15°C to 22°C, but bring the most rain days, around eight or nine a month. Winter is crisp: January peaks at about 10°C with lows near 1°C. Prices across the board tend to rise during UK school holidays and bank-holiday weekends, so if you are flexible, term-time dates are worth comparing.

Booking your package

For a city stay, most travellers choose room only or bed and breakfast and eat out, which in Madrid is half the point.

On this page you can compare live deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach side by side, and check hotel prices if you prefer to arrange things separately. You can also browse tours and tickets for the museums and palaces, and compare car hire.
