Cheap Holidays to Madrid: When to Go and How to Save
City · Spain
Finding cheap holidays to Madrid is mostly a question of timing and a little planning. Spain's capital is a city of more than three million people, with direct flights from the UK into Madrid airport, a short 12-minute drive from the centre. That means you spend your money on the city rather than on long transfers. And what a city to spend it on: the Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Royal Palace of Madrid all sit within about half a mile of each other. Being inland, Madrid swings from cool winters to hot summers, so picking the right month matters for both comfort and cost. Below, I set out when to go, where to stay and how to keep the bill down.

Cheaper, quieter months to go
The shoulder months of March, April, October and November are when a cheap holiday in Madrid is most realistic. Demand eases outside the peak, and the weather is pleasant for walking: highs of around 16°C in March, 19°C in April, 22°C in October and 15°C in November. The trade-off is rain, with about eight or nine wet days in each of those months, so pack a light jacket and plan a museum day for the showers.
May, June and September are the most comfortable months, with highs between 25°C and 30°C, which is exactly why they tend to be popular. July and August are hot, around 33°C to 34°C with barely any rain, and UK school holidays push up demand for flights. Winter is cool, with January highs near 10°C and lows close to freezing, but if you don't mind wrapping up, it can make a good cheap break to Madrid for art and food rather than sunshine.
Where to stay for less
Madrid is a city rather than a string of resorts, so the choice is really between the centre and the surrounding towns. Staying centrally puts the Prado, the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral and the Convent of Las Descalzas Reales within walking distance, which saves on transport and time, especially on a short stay.
If you would rather look further out, the wider Madrid area includes Leganés, about 7 miles from the centre, and Las Rozas de Madrid and San Sebastián de los Reyes, both around 11 miles away, with Pinto at roughly 12 miles. San Sebastián de los Reyes is only about 7 minutes by car from the airport, handy for late arrivals. You can check hotel prices across these areas on this page and weigh any saving against the journey into the city.

For cheap weekend breaks in Madrid, a Thursday-to-Sunday or Sunday-to-Wednesday pattern can work as well as a classic weekend. Booking early for the popular months, and keeping an eye out for later offers in the shoulder season, gives you the widest choice.
