Lanzarote Weather: Month-by-Month Temperatures and Rain

Island · Canary Islands · Spain

Lanzarote weather is the reason so many British travellers return to this Canary Island in every season. The averages recorded at Puerto del Carmen never drop below 21°C by day, even in January and February, and climb to 29°C in August. Rain is scarce: no month averages more than five wet days, and from July to September it is typically a single day with barely a millimetre. With direct flights from the UK into Lanzarote airport (ACE), a few minutes from Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife, this is a reliable choice for a winter-sun week or a summer fortnight. The live forecast sits above; below is the pattern you can plan around.

What the climate is like

The figures on this page come from the weather station at Puerto del Carmen, the island's busiest resort on the south-east coast. They describe a gentle, dry climate with a narrow range: daytime highs move between 21°C in midwinter and 29°C in August, while night-time lows stay between 15°C and 21°C all year. That is why every month counts as a good month to go, and why there is no real off-season or shoulder season to speak of.

Rain, when it comes, falls mostly between October and March. February is the wettest month at around 17mm, and March has the most wet days at five. Even then, those totals are small, and most days stay dry. If you have been checking BBC weather in Lanzarote or another short-range forecast, it helps to know that the averages here are what the island tends to deliver year after year.

Month by month through the year

January is the coolest and driest of the winter months, with highs of 21°C, lows of 15°C and usually just one wet day. Lanzarote February weather stays at the same 21°C by day and 15°C at night, but it is the wettest month on paper, with about 17mm spread over four days. So the temperature in Lanzarote in February is mild rather than hot: shirt-sleeve days, cooler evenings. March warms to 23°C, though it has the most rainy days of the year at five.

April reaches 25°C with almost no rain, and May and June hold at 24°C to 25°C, with warmer nights arriving in June at 19°C. July brings 27°C, August is the hottest month at 29°C with lows of 21°C, and September settles back to 27°C. All three summer months average one wet day and around 1mm of rain.

October is a surprise for many: at 28°C it is the second-warmest month, with three wet days. The temperature in Lanzarote in November is still 25°C by day and 18°C at night, with about 12mm of rain. For Lanzarote weather in December, expect highs of 22°C, lows of 15°C and around two wet days, which makes it a popular month for winter sun before Christmas and over the festive break.

What to pack by season

From December to March, pack for warm days and cooler evenings. Lanzarote temperature in December and through to February peaks around 21°C to 22°C and falls to 15°C at night, so a light jumper or jacket for dinner is sensible, and a thin waterproof will cover the odd shower in February and March.

From April to November, summer clothes do the job almost every day. Highs of 27°C to 29°C from July to October call for high-factor sun cream, a hat and sunglasses, especially if you plan to spend time out in the open at Timanfaya National Park or Los Volcanes Natural Park. Comfortable shoes are worth bringing for the volcanic landscapes and for wandering around Arrecife or Teguise. If you plan to explore by car, you can compare car hire here alongside the package and hotel options on this page.

Coast and inland across the island

All the averages above are measured at Puerto del Carmen, on the coast close to Tías and Playa de los Pocillos. They are a good guide to the main south-east resorts, but the table does not include separate readings for the inland villages such as San Bartolomé, Teguise or Haría in the north, nor for Playa Blanca in the south or Costa Teguise further up the coast.

For a specific day out to El Golfo, the Jardín de Cactus at Guatiza or the Fundación César Manrique, the Lanzarote weather forecast shown above the text is the best way to check conditions closer to the date.

What to pack for Lanzarote in October

  • Light clothes, a hat and high-factor sun cream: October highs average 28°C.
