Costa Dorada Hotels: Where to Stay from Salou to Calafell
Coast · Spain
Choosing between Costa Dorada hotels is mostly a question of which stretch of this Catalan coast suits your holiday. The busy southern end around Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda sits a few minutes from Reus airport, with PortAventura's water park on the doorstep. Tarragona adds a proper city with Roman ruins. Further north, Torredembarra, Coma-ruga, Calafell and Cunit are smaller towns, closer to Barcelona airport. This page walks you through each area, the kind of stay each is suited to, and when to book. Live hotel prices, package deals and car hire appear alongside, so you can compare them here as you read.

Salou is the name most British travellers know, and by some distance the most searched-for resort on this coast. It is a town of around 27,000 people, about 3 miles from the centre of the Costa Dorada, with Cap de Sant Pere beach and PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park close by. La Pineda, a little over 4 miles out, sits on the same stretch, and both are about 7 minutes from Reus airport. Cambrils, roughly 11 minutes from the airport, is a slightly larger town of about 32,000, with the Castell de Vilafortuny nearby; Mont-roig del Camp lies a little further along, around 8 miles from the centre.
Tarragona is different in kind: a city of more than 140,000 people, 6 minutes from Reus, built over the Roman colony of Tarraco. The Roman theatre, amphitheatre, circus and forums, the cathedral and the National Archaeological Museum are all here, and L'Arrabassada beach gives you sand within the city limits.
The northern towns are quieter and smaller. Torredembarra (about 52 minutes from Barcelona airport), Coma-ruga (42 minutes, home to the Pau Casals Museum), Calafell (39 minutes, with its castle and Iberian citadel) and Cunit (34 minutes) each have populations between roughly 4,000 and 24,000, and suit travellers who would rather fly into Barcelona.
What kind of stay to expect
Salou, La Pineda and Cambrils are the classic package-holiday resorts of this coast, the places where tour operators concentrate their beach hotels and where a family can be at the water park within minutes. If you want a pool, a beach a short walk away and a quick transfer, this southern cluster is where to look.
Tarragona works better for a city stay: a hotel near the old centre puts the Roman sites and the cathedral on foot, and you can still reach the beach at L'Arrabassada. It also pairs well with a few nights in one of the resorts.
In the smaller northern towns, from Torredembarra up to Cunit, expect a more local, low-key feel. Their size suggests fewer large resort hotels, so check the live listings on this page to see what is available for your dates.
When and how to book
The best months are April to August. In Salou, highs climb from 21°C in April to 31°C in August, while October is the wettest month with around 145mm of rain over 12 days, so a late-season break carries more risk of showers. Summer school holidays are the busiest weeks for family resorts like Salou and La Pineda, and prices generally reflect that; booking early or travelling in May or June gives you more choice.
Most British travellers book a package with flights, hotel and transfers together. Both Reus and Barcelona have direct flights from the UK: choose Reus for Tarragona, Salou, La Pineda and Cambrils, and Barcelona for Cunit, Calafell, Coma-ruga and Torredembarra. You can compare package deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach on this page, alongside live hotel prices, tours and tickets, and car hire if you plan to explore beyond your resort.

Questions people ask
What is the best beach on the Costa Dorada?
It depends on where you stay. In Salou, Cap de Sant Pere is close to the centre of the resort area, while Tarragona has L'Arrabassada, a city beach separated from La Savinosa by Arrabassada Point. Both are easy to reach from the main resort hotels.
Which airport should I fly into for the Costa Dorada?
Reus is the closest for the southern resorts: about 6 minutes to Tarragona, 7 to Salou and La Pineda, and 11 to Cambrils. Barcelona suits the northern towns, around 34 minutes to Cunit and 52 to Torredembarra. Both have direct flights from the UK.
Where should families stay on the Costa Dorada?
Salou and La Pineda are the obvious choices. They are around 7 minutes from Reus airport and close to PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park, which is part of the PortAventura World Resort, so transfers are short and days out are easy.
When is the best time to book a Costa Dorada hotel?
April to August are the best months for weather, with highs from 21°C to 31°C. October is the wettest month. Summer school holidays are the busiest period, so booking early or choosing May or June gives more hotel choice.
Is Tarragona a good base for a holiday?
Yes, if you want history as well as beaches. The city holds the Roman theatre, amphitheatre, circus and forums of Tarraco, the cathedral and the National Archaeological Museum, plus L'Arrabassada beach, and it is only 6 minutes from Reus airport.
