Costa Dorada Holidays: Resorts, Weather and Getting There

Coast · Spain

Costa Dorada holidays suit British travellers who want a beach fortnight with something real to see between swims. This stretch of the Catalan coast, also spelt Costa Daurada, runs from Mont-roig del Camp and Cambrils past Salou and La Pineda to Tarragona, then on towards Torredembarra, Coma-ruga, Calafell and Cunit. Salou is the resort most people book, with the PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park on its doorstep. Tarragona, a city of around 141,500 people, sits on the remains of Roman Tarraco. Summers peak at 31°C in August, and Reus airport puts the main resorts under a quarter of an hour from the arrivals hall.

What kind of coast this is

The Costa Dorada is a family-friendly, easy-to-reach coast south of Barcelona, built around a chain of seaside towns rather than one big strip. Every member town here is coastal, so wherever you base yourself the sea is close, but the character changes as you move along it: resort energy at Salou and La Pineda, a working harbour feel at Cambrils, and a proper city with two thousand years of history at Tarragona.

What sets it apart from other Spanish costas is the Roman layer. Tarragona was Tarraco, and its remains are spread through the modern city: the colonial and provincial forums, the Roman circus, the Early Christian cemetery and the National Archaeological Museum, all within reach of a day off the sunbed.

Which resort suits you

Salou is the headline name and the obvious pick for families, with the PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park about 4 miles away and the Cap de Sant Pere beach nearby. La Pineda, next door, is smaller and a similar distance from Reus. Cambrils, a town of around 32,000, is the calmer choice, with the Castell de Vilafortuny on its edge and Mont-roig del Camp further along for quieter stays.

Tarragona works for travellers who want a city break with beaches attached: the cathedral of St. Tecla, the amphitheatre above the sea and L'Arrabassada beach are all in town. North-east towards Barcelona, Torredembarra, Coma-ruga, Calafell and Cunit are smaller seaside towns; Coma-ruga has the Pau Casals Museum, and Calafell has both its castle and an Iron Age Iberian citadel.

When to go for sun

April to August is the best window. Spring is mild, with highs of 21°C in April and 23°C in May, then the heat builds to 27°C in June, 30°C in July and 31°C in August, when the coast is at its busiest and school-holiday dates push demand up.

September is still warm at 27°C but rain picks up, and October is the wettest month by far, with around 145mm over 12 days on average. Winter is mild rather than beach weather, with highs of 15°C to 17°C from December to February: fine for walking Roman Tarragona without the crowds.

Getting there from the UK

Two airports have direct flights from the UK. Reus is the one to aim for if you are staying in the southern resorts: transfers take about 6 minutes to Tarragona, 7 to Salou or La Pineda and 11 to Cambrils, among the shortest airport runs anywhere in Spain.

Barcelona airport makes more sense for the northern towns, with drives of roughly 34 minutes to Cunit, 39 to Calafell, 42 to Coma-ruga and 52 to Torredembarra. Travellers bringing their own car can use the ferry port at Barcelona, around 30 miles from the heart of the coast.

Booking your package and extras

Most British travellers book this coast as a package: flight, hotel and airport transfer together, usually from a UK airport into Reus or Barcelona, with a choice of board basis from self-catering to all inclusive. You can compare package deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach on this page, and check hotel prices resort by resort.

The page also lists tours and tickets across nine towns on the coast, useful for the water park or guided visits to Tarraco, and you can compare car hire if you want to explore Calafell, Coma-ruga or inland on your own schedule. Prices move with school holidays, so it pays to compare dates.

Questions people ask

What is the best beach on the Costa Dorada?

It depends on where you stay. In Tarragona, L'Arrabassada is the city's best-known beach, separated from La Savinosa by Arrabassada Point. Near Salou, Cap de Sant Pere is a popular stretch, and every town along the coast, from Cambrils to Cunit, has its own seafront.

Which airport is best for Salou and Cambrils?

Reus. It has direct flights from the UK and the transfer is about 7 minutes to Salou and La Pineda, 11 minutes to Cambrils and 6 minutes to Tarragona. Barcelona is better suited to the northern towns such as Cunit and Calafell.

When is the best time to visit the Costa Dorada?

April to August. Highs climb from 21°C in April to 31°C in August, with relatively little rain. September is still warm, but October is the wettest month, averaging around 145mm of rain over 12 days.

Is Tarragona worth a day trip from Salou?

Yes, and it is close. Tarragona was the Roman city of Tarraco, and you can see the amphitheatre, the Roman circus, the UNESCO-listed Roman theatre, the forums, the cathedral of St. Tecla and the National Archaeological Museum.

Is the Costa Dorada good for families?

It is one of the easier Spanish coasts for families. Salou has the PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park nearby, airport transfers from Reus take minutes rather than hours, and summer highs of 27°C to 31°C keep beach days reliable.
