Car Hire Costa Dorada: Airports, Resorts and Driving Tips

Coast · Spain

Car hire on the Costa Dorada is less about necessity and more about reach. Reus airport sits just 6 minutes from Tarragona and 7 from Salou and La Pineda, so getting to your hotel is quick by any means. A car earns its keep once you want more than one beach: the Roman remains of Tarraco in Tarragona, the castle and Iberian citadel at Calafell, the Pau Casals Museum at Coma-ruga and the quieter resorts strung along this stretch of Catalan coast. This page shows a live comparison of car hire prices from both Reus and Barcelona, so you can weigh up a few days with wheels against a fortnight without.

  • Reus airport is only 6 to 11 minutes from Tarragona, Salou, La Pineda and Cambrils.
  • Tarragona's Roman amphitheatre, circus and forum make an easy half-day drive from Salou or Cambrils.
  • Calafell's Iberian citadel and castle sit around 27 miles up the coast, best reached by car.

Airports for Costa Dorada

Reus (REU), Barcelona (BCN) and Girona (GRO) have direct flights from the UK, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, London Luton and Manchester.

Do you really need a car

For a classic beach holiday in Salou, La Pineda or Cambrils, honestly, probably not for the whole stay. Transfers from Reus are among the shortest anywhere in Spain, and PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park and the beach at Cap de Sant Pere are right on Salou's doorstep.

The picture changes if you are curious. Tarragona, around 9 miles from the centre of the coast, holds the Roman theatre, amphitheatre, circus, colonial and provincial forums, the Early Christian cemetery, the National Archaeological Museum and the Cathedral of St. Tecla. Further north, Torredembarra, Coma-ruga, Calafell and Cunit lie roughly 17 to 30 miles away, and Mont-roig del Camp is about 8 miles in the other direction. Hiring a car for two or three days of a longer stay is often the sweet spot.

Where to pick up your car

Reus is the natural choice for the southern resorts. It has direct flights from the UK, and the drive is 6 minutes to Tarragona, 7 minutes to Salou or La Pineda and 11 minutes to Cambrils. Collecting here means you are on the beach almost before the paperwork is dry.

Barcelona also has direct flights from the UK and suits the northern end of the coast: Cunit is 34 minutes away, Calafell 39, Coma-ruga 42 and Torredembarra 52. If you are flying into Barcelona for a Costa Daurada holiday anyway, car hire from the airport avoids a separate transfer. You can compare car hire at both airports on this page.

What driving here is like

This is a coastal drive rather than a mountain one: every resort covered here sits on the sea, and the main sights are either in the resorts themselves or in Tarragona. Distances are short, so you will spend more time looking for parking near the Roman sites or the beaches than actually driving.

The weather shapes your plans more than the roads do. July and August reach 30 to 31°C, so a car with good air conditioning matters and early starts for sightseeing make sense. October is the wettest month, with around 145mm of rain over 12 days, so allow extra time and care on wet roads in autumn.

Booking tips worth knowing

Choose a full-to-full fuel policy where you can: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full, paying only for what you use. Check the excess carefully, and decide before you travel whether to cover it, so you are not pressed into extras at the desk.

If you are travelling with children, request child seats at the time of booking rather than on arrival, especially in the busy months of April to August. Short hires of a few days within a longer stay are easy to arrange, and the live comparison on this page lets you check options from Reus and Barcelona side by side.

Questions people ask

What is the best beach on the Costa Dorada?

It depends on your base. Cap de Sant Pere sits right by Salou, ideal without a car, while L'Arrabassada lies on the Tarragona coast beside La Savinosa beach, separated by Arrabassada Point. With a car you can easily try both in one day.

Which airport is best for car hire on the Costa Dorada?

Reus is best for Salou, La Pineda, Cambrils and Tarragona, all 6 to 11 minutes away. Barcelona suits the northern resorts such as Cunit at 34 minutes and Calafell at 39. Both airports have direct flights from the UK.

Do I need a car to visit Tarragona's Roman sites?

Not strictly, as Tarragona is only around 9 miles from the main resorts. A car does make it easier to combine the amphitheatre, Roman theatre, circus, forums and the National Archaeological Museum with a beach stop on the way back.

Is it worth driving to Calafell and Coma-ruga?

Yes, if you enjoy history and music. Calafell has its castle and an Iron Age Iberian citadel about 27 miles away, and Coma-ruga has the Pau Casals Museum, roughly 25 miles from the centre of the coast.

When is the best time for a driving holiday on the Costa Dorada?

April to June offers warm days of 21 to 27°C without peak summer heat. July and August reach 30 to 31°C, while October is the wettest month, with around 12 rainy days.
