Getting there from the UK

Flights, Drives and Ferries

Three airports with direct flights from the UK lie within easy reach. Gibraltar is the closest, about 22 miles away and roughly 32 minutes by car. Málaga is around 40 miles away, a drive of just under an hour, and Jerez is about 55 miles away, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by road. Car hire or a pre-booked transfer works well from any of them.

Driving from the UK is possible but long: from Calais it takes around 25 hours behind the wheel, so most people split the journey over several days. Nearby ports serve onward routes to Morocco rather than the UK, with Algeciras about 27 miles away, Tarifa about 39 miles and Málaga about 45 miles.

Day Trips from Estepona

The nearest neighbours are Manilva, about 7 miles away, and Casares, around 8 miles inland. Benahavís and Genalguacil are both roughly 9 miles away, and Gaucín is about 11 miles from town, making for an easy half day by car.

A little further afield, Igualeja is around 14 miles away, while Istán and Marbella are each about 16 miles away. Marbella, a much larger town of over 150,000 people, offers a livelier contrast to the small inland villages, several of which have only a few hundred to a couple of thousand residents.

Tips from Robin

Practical Tips for Your Stay

Plan around the seasons. July and August bring 32°C days and warm nights with virtually no rain, so beach time is best in the morning or late afternoon, while October is the wettest month and worth avoiding if you want guaranteed dry days.

A hire car pays off if you want to explore. The town's own sights are close together, but the inland villages such as Casares, Genalguacil and Gaucín are small places best reached by road. With around 67,000 residents, Estepona is a working town rather than a purely seasonal resort. For something different, ferries from Algeciras, about 27 miles away, cross to Tangier Med and Ceuta.
