Elche is a sizeable inland city of around 235,000 people in the Provincia de Alicante, set 96 metres above sea level and only a few minutes' drive from Alicante airport. It is a place for culture rather than sunbeds: the Basilica of St. Mary, the Palacio de Altamira and a cluster of museums sit within half a mile of the centre, while the archaeological site of L'Alcúdia lies just over a mile and a half out. Summers are hot and dry, spring and autumn are mild, and the winter months stay pleasantly temperate. For British travellers, Elche works equally well as a city break in its own right or as a cultural base for exploring this corner of the Valencia region.

Where to stay in Elche

Choosing a Base in Elche

Elche is an inland city rather than a beach resort, so the main question is how close you want to be to the historic centre. Staying near the Basilica of St. Mary and the Palacio de Altamira puts most of the museums within a short walk, which suits a culture-focused break and avoids the need for car hire.

As a city of more than 230,000 people, Elche has a livelier, everyday urban feel than the smaller towns around it. Those wanting somewhere quieter, or closer to L'Alcúdia on the outskirts, may prefer to stay a little outside the core. The page shows live hotel prices so you can compare options across the city.

Hire a car

The easiest way to reach Elche and the villages around it is a hire car from Alicante (ALC), about 11 min away.
