Places to Go in Santa Ponsa: Mallorca Resort Guide
Resort · Balearic Islands · Mallorca · Spain
Santa Ponsa is a coastal resort town of around 10,700 people on the south-west side of Mallorca, a 20-minute drive from Palma de Mallorca airport. When British travellers ask me about places to go in Santa Ponsa, I start with what the town does unusually well: archaeology on your doorstep. Puig de Sa Morisca and its archaeological park sit right in town, with a Roman settlement and another ancient site within a mile. Beaches are close too, from Caló d'en Pellicer in town to Platja del Toro in neighbouring El Toro. Summers are hot and dry, May and June are the sweet spot, and flights land a short transfer away.

What kind of place this is
Santa Ponsa is a proper town rather than a strip of hotels, with a population of just over 10,700 and its own coastline on the Calvià side of Mallorca. It works well as a beach base, but what sets it apart from many Mallorcan resorts is how much history lies within walking distance.
Puig de Sa Morisca is an archaeological site in the town itself, and the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park is about half a mile away. Within the same radius you will find the Roman settlement of sa Mesquida and the archaeological site of Turó de ses Abelles. For anyone putting together a Santa Ponsa travel guide of their own, that cluster is the obvious starting point, with the small beach of Caló d'en Pellicer close by for the afternoon.
Choosing between the two areas
Santa Ponsa is the larger of the two coastal places covered here and has the most sights: the archaeological sites, the park and the beach at Caló d'en Pellicer are all in or right next to the town.
El Toro lies about 2 miles away and is much smaller, with around 2,300 residents. It is the better pick if beaches and coastal walks top your list. Platja del Toro is roughly a mile from Santa Ponsa, while the beach at Cala Figuera and the Cala Figuera Lighthouse are around 4 miles out, both counted as El Toro's. Many visitors stay in one and simply hop to the other, since the drive between them takes minutes.
When to book your holiday
May and June are the best months. May reaches around 24°C with seven rainy days, and June climbs to 29°C with just five, so you get beach weather without the peak heat. July and August are the hottest months at 32°C. Santa Ponsa in August is dry, with about four rainy days and 22mm of rain, and nights stay warm at around 23°C.
September is still warm at 28°C, but it is also the wettest month, with around 68mm across ten rainy days, and October and November stay showery. Winter is mild rather than warm, with highs of 15°C to 17°C from December to February, suited to walking and the archaeological sites rather than sunbathing. These figures come from the Palma weather station, so check a live forecast before you fly.
Getting there from the UK
Palma de Mallorca (PMI) is the airport to use, with direct flights from the United Kingdom. The drive to Santa Ponsa takes about 20 minutes and El Toro about 21 minutes, which makes this one of the shortest transfers on the island. Whether you are flying Belfast to Santa Ponsa or leaving from an English or Scottish airport, you arrive at the same place.
If you are arriving by sea, Palma's ferry port is about 9 miles away, and Alcúdia's is around 42 miles across the island. Car hire is worth considering if you want to reach the Cala Figuera Lighthouse and the beaches beyond El Toro at your own pace.
What you can book here
Most British travellers book Santa Ponsa as a package holiday: flights, hotel and airport transfers in one booking. In practice that means a direct flight to Palma, a transfer of around 20 minutes to your hotel, and a choice of board basis, from room only or bed and breakfast up to half board or all-inclusive. Prices rise during UK school holidays, so travelling in May or June outside half-term usually gives more choice.
On this page you can compare package deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach side by side, which is handy if you already have a Jet2 Santa Ponsa holiday in mind and want to see the alternatives. You can also check hotel prices, browse tours and tickets for the area, and compare car hire for days out along the coast.
