What kind of place it is
Puerto del Carmen is a coastal resort town of around 30,000 people, strung along the shore close to Lanzarote's airport. Its own beaches set the rhythm of a stay: Fariones Playa is barely half a mile from the centre, Playa de los Pocillos about two miles along, and Playa de Matagorda, which falls within neighbouring Tías, roughly 2.5 miles away.
As for the best things to do around Puerto del Carmen, beyond the sand there is Rancho Texas Park, a zoo about a mile out, and the Lanzarote Aeronautical Museum around four miles away. Aviation fans also gather at the aircraft landing viewpoint at Matagorda, about three miles off, where planes come in low towards the runway. The larger day out is Los Volcanes Natural Park, a protected volcanic landscape some six miles from the resort.
Puerto del Carmen and Tías
Most holidaymakers base themselves in Puerto del Carmen itself, the coastal town where Fariones Playa and Playa de los Pocillos sit and where Rancho Texas Park is close at hand.
Tías, about three miles away with a population of nearly 20,000, is the neighbouring town and covers much of the surrounding area. Playa de Matagorda, the Lanzarote Aeronautical Museum, the Matagorda landing viewpoint and the edge of Los Volcanes Natural Park all fall within it, so you will likely pass through it on day trips whichever side you stay on.
Weather through the year
There is no real off-season here. January and February bring highs of about 21°C and lows of 15°C, which is why winter sun is such a draw from the UK. Spring warms to around 23°C in March and 25°C in April, and the heat builds to 27°C in July and a peak of 29°C in August, with nights around 21°C.
Rain is scarce: March has the most wet days at around five, and from July to September you can expect about one. October is still very warm at around 28°C. For anyone weighing up New Year's Eve in Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen typically sees December highs of 22°C and lows of 15°C, with only two or so rainy days in the month. Bear in mind that school holidays push package prices up at Christmas, Easter and in summer.
Getting there from the UK
Lanzarote airport (ACE) has direct flights from the United Kingdom and is about as close to a resort as airports get: a six-minute drive to Puerto del Carmen and four minutes to Tías. On a package holiday the transfer is included, so you are usually at your accommodation shortly after collecting your bags.
If you fancy exploring further, car hire makes Los Volcanes Natural Park and the coast easy to reach. Ferry ports lie at Arrecife, about six miles away, Playa Blanca around 11 miles, and Corralejo roughly 18 miles off.
Booking your holiday
Most British visitors book Puerto del Carmen as a package: flights from a UK airport, accommodation and the short airport transfer in one booking, with a board basis of your choice, from self-catering or bed and breakfast to half board or all inclusive. You can compare package deals from several providers on this page.
If you have been browsing Owners Direct or HomeAway for Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen, it is worth checking hotel prices here too as a comparison. The page also lists tours and tickets for the area and lets you compare car hire for days out to Los Volcanes Natural Park and beyond.
