Roman Ruins, Castles and Museums

Start with the Roman Theatre of Cartagena, an archaeological site about 0.2 miles from the centre and the city's most celebrated monument. The Museo del Teatro Romano de Cartagena, roughly a quarter of a mile away, sets the theatre in context, and the Carthago Nova amphitheatre is at a similar distance. The Molinete archaeological park, only about 0.1 miles from the centre, rounds out the Roman picture and works well with children.

Further out, the Cave of Los Aviones is a prehistoric cave site around 1.2 miles away, while the Castle of San Julián stands about 1.7 miles out. Closer in, the medieval Castle of La Concepción, the Castle of Los Moros (0.6 miles) and the Castle of Despeñaperros (0.3 miles) add to the city's run of fortifications. The National Museum of Underwater Archaeology and the Naval Museum of Cartagena are both about 0.3 miles from the centre, and the Palacio de Aguirre, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad and the former bullring, in use from 1854 to 1986, are all within a few hundred metres.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Old Town or Mar Menor Coast

Almost every major sight in Cartagena lies within half a mile of the centre, so staying in or near the old town means walking to the Roman Theatre, the museums and the castles. As a city of more than 200,000 people, it feels like a working place rather than a resort, with life well beyond the holiday season.

If you would rather wake up by the sea, the resorts of the Mar Menor and the coast are within 12 to 19 miles, from Los Alcázares to San Pedro del Pinatar, with tiny Cabo de Palos the quietest option. This page shows live hotel prices so you can compare the city with the coast.

Hire a car

The easiest way to reach Cartagena and the villages around it is a hire car from Murcia (RMU), about 23 min away.

Tips from Robin

Practical Tips for Your Visit

In July and August temperatures reach 30°C to 31°C, and the city sits at sea level with little shade around open ruins, so visit the Roman Theatre and the hilltop castles in the morning or late afternoon.

Most key sights cluster within half a mile of each other, so you can see much of Cartagena on foot; keep car hire for the Cave of Los Aviones, the Castle of San Julián and coastal day trips. If you travel in March or September, the wettest months, pack a light waterproof and keep the indoor museums in reserve.
