Mijas Spain Holidays: Resorts, Weather and Package Deals
Resort · Costa del Sol · Spain
Mijas Spain holidays start with one big practical advantage: Málaga airport, with direct flights from the UK, is roughly 13 minutes' drive away. That puts you on a sunlounger or in the old bullring square of Mijas Pueblo before most transfers elsewhere have left the car park. Mijas sits on the Costa del Sol between Fuengirola and Benalmádena, each about 4 miles away, with the inland town of Alhaurín el Grande a similar distance behind. Summers are hot and almost rainless, spring and early autumn are warm, and the zoo, castles and beaches of the neighbouring towns are all close. On this page you can compare live package deals, hotel prices, tours and car hire in one place.

Who this coast suits best
Families do well here because the short airport transfer takes the sting out of travelling with children, and the best-known day out, Bioparc Fuengirola, is only around 4 miles away. Add the castle at Castillo de Suel above Fuengirola and the beaches at Calahonda, and there is plenty to fill a week without long drives.
Couples and anyone after a gentler pace tend to gravitate towards Mijas Pueblo, the hillside part of town, with its bullring, the Plaza de toros de Mijas, and the small Museo de Miniaturas de Mijas. Golfers have La Cala Resort around 6 miles away, and walkers can head for the protected dunes of Dunas de Artola o Cabopino.
If you want the most going on around you, Fuengirola is the larger neighbouring town with the greatest number of sights listed nearby. For a quieter inland base, Alhaurín el Grande is the only one of the four towns here that is not on the coast.
Which resort suits you
Holidays to Mijas Costa del Sol usually mean choosing between four close neighbours. Mijas itself is the largest by population and splits between the coastal stretch known as Mijas Costa and the hilltop Mijas Pueblo, where the bullring and miniature museum sit. It works well if you want a mix of beach and an older town centre.
Fuengirola, about 4 miles away, has the densest cluster of things to do: Bioparc Fuengirola, the Bullring of Fuengirola, Castillo de Suel, Fuengirola Mosque, the Calaburras Lighthouse and the Roman baths of Termas romanas de Torreblanca del Sol. Benalmádena, also around 4 miles off, is the closest of the group to Málaga airport at about 10 minutes, and has Castillo Monumento Colomares, Benalmádena Museum and the Cueva de los Botijos archaeological cave.
Alhaurín el Grande lies inland, roughly 4 miles from Mijas and about 15 minutes from the airport. It suits travellers who prefer a quieter base and are happy to drive to the beach, so car hire is worth comparing if you stay there.

When to book for the weather
The best months for holidays in Mijas Spain are April, May, June and September. April averages around 22°C with only four rain days, May reaches 24°C, June 27°C and September 26°C, warm enough for the beach without the full heat of high summer.
July and August are the hottest months, at around 33°C and 32°C, with July recording almost no rain at all. That suits sun-seekers, but expect school-holiday demand to push package prices up across these weeks, as it does at Easter and October half-term.
Winter is mild rather than hot, with daytime highs of 15°C to 16°C from December to February. October is the wettest month, with around 120 mm of rain over nine days, and March can be damp too, so pack a light layer if you travel in the shoulder season.
Getting there from the UK
Málaga (AGP) is the obvious airport, with direct flights from the UK and a transfer of about 13 minutes to Mijas. From the same airport, Benalmádena is around 10 minutes, Alhaurín el Grande about 15 minutes and Fuengirola about 17 minutes, so even a shared coach transfer that stops at several hotels is short.
Gibraltar (GIB) also has direct flights from the UK. It is a longer haul by road, about 71 minutes to Mijas and around 69 minutes to Fuengirola, but it can be a useful option if the flight times or departure airport suit you better.
Booking your package holiday
A package holiday bundles your flight, hotel and airport transfer into one booking, and when it is sold as a package it is ATOL-protected, so you are covered if something goes wrong with the company. With Málaga so close, package holidays to Mijas Costa mean very little time between landing and checking in. Look closely at the board basis, from room only and bed and breakfast to half board or all inclusive, as it makes a real difference to the overall cost of a week or a fortnight.
On this page you can compare live offers for package holidays to Mijas Spain from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach, so if you have been searching for Jet2 Mijas Costa options you can see them side by side with the others.
