Cheap Holidays to Menorca: When to Go and Where to Stay

Island · Balearic Islands · Spain

Cheap holidays to Menorca are mostly a matter of timing and choosing your base well. The island's single airport sits just outside Maó, so transfers are short wherever you stay, and the summer runs long: Maó averages 26°C in June and September and still 24°C in October. Avoid the peak weeks, pick a resort with plenty of rooms, and you can enjoy the same coves, castles and prehistoric sites for noticeably less. Below, I set out which months tend to offer better value, which bases usually cost less, how British travellers trim the bill, and how to get there. You can also compare package, hotel and car hire deals on this page.

  • Menorca airport is only 3 minutes from Sant Lluís and 4 minutes from Maó by road.
  • October in Maó still averages 24°C highs, after the UK school holidays end.
  • Coves such as Cala Mitjana and Cales Coves cost nothing to enjoy, whatever your budget.

Which months offer better value

Menorca's main season runs from June to October, and prices generally follow demand, climbing through July and August when British schools break up. July is the hottest and driest month, averaging 30°C with barely a day of rain, which is exactly why it is busiest.

The edges of the season are where the value lies. Early June and late September both average 26°C highs, and October still reaches 24°C, warm enough for beach days. If you are hunting for cheap holidays to Menorca in September, aim for the weeks after the schools go back. May, at 21°C, and April, at 19°C, suit walkers and anyone visiting the archaeological sites rather than sunbathers.

November to March is quiet, with highs of 15°C to 20°C. It suits a short city break in Maó more than a beach holiday.

Bases that tend to cost less

As a rule, larger and busier places with more accommodation and short transfers give you more choice of room, and more choice usually means keener prices. Cala'n Bosch is the island's most sought-after resort, and its sheer popularity means a wide spread of package options. Cala Galdana, on the south coast, is smaller and often in demand for its sheltered bay.

Maó, or Mahón, is Menorca's largest town with around 29,000 residents, and it sits 4 minutes from the airport, so transfer time is minimal. Sant Lluís is even closer at 3 minutes and puts you near Binissafullet and the Illa de l'Aire lighthouse. Inland towns such as Alaior, 9 minutes from the airport, and Mercadal, 16 minutes away, can work well for travellers with car hire who want to explore. At the other end of the island, Ciutadella offers a historic town base with its own ferry port.

Simple ways to spend less

Flexibility saves the most. Midweek flights often cost less than weekend departures, and flying from a regional UK airport rather than a London one can bring both the fare and the journey to the airport down. Booking well ahead for summer, or watching for late offers in the shoulder weeks, gives you the best chance of good holiday deals in Menorca.

Cheap package holidays to Menorca bundle the flight, hotel and transfers, which keeps things simple and puts the luggage and transfer in one booking. Compare board basis carefully: all-inclusive suits families who would otherwise eat out three times a day, while self-catering suits couples happy to shop locally. For cheap family holidays in Menorca, travelling just outside the school holidays makes the biggest difference.

The island's best experiences are often free: Cala Mitjana, Cala Llucalari and Cales Coves, the S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park, and the prehistoric site of Torralba d'en Salort. You can compare Menorca holiday deals from several package providers here, alongside hotel prices, tours and car hire.

Getting there from the UK

Menorca Airport (MAH) has direct flights from the United Kingdom and lies on the edge of Maó. Drive times are short: about 3 minutes to Sant Lluís, 4 minutes to Maó, 9 minutes to Alaior and 16 minutes to Mercadal, so even a resort transfer rarely eats into your first day.

The island also has ferry ports at Maó and Ciutadella, useful if you are combining Menorca with elsewhere in the Balearics. Car hire is worth considering if you plan to reach the Castle of Santa Àgueda, Cova des Coloms or the more remote coves, and you can compare car hire deals on this page.

Busy resorts with plenty of rooms, such as Cala'n Bosch, give the widest choice of deals. Maó and Sant Lluís are only 4 and 3 minutes from the airport, which keeps transfers short. Inland Alaior and Mercadal suit travellers with car hire.

Which beaches in Menorca are worth visiting?

The south coast bays are the highlight. Cala Mitjana and Cala Llucalari are both well-known coves, and Cales Coves near Alaior is another favourite. Cala Galdana is also a popular resort bay. All cost nothing to visit.

Not if you stay put in a resort with a package transfer. But a car makes it easy to reach inland sights such as the Castle of Santa Àgueda, Cova des Coloms and Torralba d'en Salort, plus the quieter coves. You can compare car hire options on this page.
