Málaga Weather: Month-by-Month Climate Guide for Your Holiday

City · Costa del Sol · Spain

Málaga weather follows a clear and dependable rhythm, which is good news when you are booking months ahead from the UK. Summer is long, hot and almost bone dry, with July averaging 31°C and recording no wet days at all. Winter is mild rather than cold: January, the coolest month, still reaches around 17°C by day and rarely drops below 9°C at night. The rain that does fall arrives mostly in autumn and early spring, with March the wettest month. Below you will find the month-by-month pattern from the Málaga climate station, the best and shoulder months, and what to pack, so you can choose dates for a beach fortnight or a city break around the Alcazaba and the Picasso museum.

The climate at a glance

Málaga spain weather is shaped by a hot, dry summer and a mild, occasionally showery winter. Daytime highs climb steadily from 17°C in January and February to 24°C in May, then 28°C in June and a peak of 31°C in July and August, before easing back through 28°C in September and 24°C in October. Nights follow the same curve, from about 9°C in January up to 23°C at the height of summer.

Rain is concentrated in a few months. March is the wettest, with around 85mm over ten days, followed by October and November at roughly 66 to 68mm across six days each. By contrast, June, July and August together see barely 18mm, and July averages just 1mm. The best months for settled weather run from May to October; January to April, November and December are the shoulder months, cooler and more changeable but rarely cold.

What each month brings

Winter, from December to February, brings highs of 17 to 18°C and lows of 9 to 11°C, with five or six wet days a month. If you are searching for Málaga in February weather, expect the driest of the winter months at around 30mm of rain, which makes it a pleasant time for the cathedral, the Roman Theatre and the museums without summer heat. Málaga in March weather is the most unsettled of the year, with about ten rainy days, though highs reach 19°C.

Spring warms quickly. For Málaga April weather, the average temperature in April is a high of 21°C and a low of 13°C, with around eight wet days, so pack for the odd shower. May is the turning point: 24°C, only four wet days, and the start of the best-months window. June brings 28°C and just two wet days, while July and August settle at 31°C by day and 23°C at night, ideal for Playa de La Malagueta and Playa de la Caleta.

September holds on to summer at 28°C with four wet days. As for Málaga October weather, the temperature in October averages a 24°C high and 17°C low, still warm for the beach, though rainfall rises to about 68mm over six days. November cools to 20°C with a similar number of wet days, and December eases back to 18°C. For the days right before you fly, check the live forecast at the top of this page.

What to pack by season

For June to September, think light and breathable: linen, shorts, sandals, a wide-brimmed hat and high-factor sun cream, because highs of 28 to 31°C and nights above 20°C leave little need for warm layers. A light cover-up helps when visiting the cathedral or the Al-Andalus Mosque.

In May and October, pack summer clothes plus a light jumper for evenings, when lows sit around 16 to 17°C, and a compact umbrella for October's showers. From November to April, bring layers: a light jacket, long trousers and comfortable waterproof shoes for climbing to the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, with lows of 9 to 13°C and up to ten wet days in March. Whatever the season, you can compare package holidays, hotel prices, tours and car hire on this page once your dates are fixed.

What to pack for Málaga in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 24°C by day and 17°C at night.
