Cheap Holidays to Málaga: When to Go and How to Save

City · Costa del Sol · Spain

Cheap holidays to Málaga work better than you might expect, because the city does a lot of the saving for you. The airport is about eight minutes from the centre, so transfers are short. The sights are clustered together too: the Alcazaba, the cathedral, the Roman Theatre and the Museo Picasso all sit within the old town, with Playa de La Malagueta about half a mile away. As a city of nearly 600,000 people, Málaga is a working place all year rather than a resort that shuts for winter. That means a cheap holiday to Málaga, Spain, can mean February sunshine at 17°C just as easily as a crowded August fortnight.

When Málaga costs less

The quieter, usually better-value months fall either side of summer: January, February, March, April, November and December. Even in deep winter, daytime highs sit around 17°C, with lows near 9 or 10°C, and February is one of the drier months, with about five rain days. December is similar at 18°C. These are city-break conditions rather than sunbathing weather, but they suit the Alcazaba, the Castle of Gibralfaro and long afternoons between museums.

March is the month to watch: it is the wettest of the year here, with around ten rain days, so pack for showers. April warms to 21°C, and November holds at 20°C with roughly six rain days. If you want beach warmth without peak-summer demand, May and October are both around 24°C and sit at the edges of the main season. July and August reach 31°C with almost no rain, and that is when school-holiday demand pushes prices up across the board.

Where to stay for less

Málaga is a single large city rather than a string of separate resorts, and that works in your favour. A place this size has plenty of hotel stock, which tends to keep the choice wide and competition healthy. Because nearly everything worth seeing is close together, you do not need a pricey address to be within walking distance of the cathedral, the Museo de Málaga or the Carmen Thyssen Museum.

The beaches are close too. Playa de La Malagueta is about half a mile from the centre, near the Plaza de toros de la Malagueta, and Playa de la Caleta is a little over a mile out. That makes it easy to stay somewhere central and good value, then walk to the sand, rather than paying extra for a sea view. Use the hotel price checker on this page to compare areas side by side for your dates.

Getting to Málaga from United Kingdom

Málaga (AGP), Granada (GRX) and Gibraltar (GIB) have direct flights from the UK, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, London Luton and Manchester.

Ways to trim the cost

The simplest saving is timing. Midweek flights are often easier on the budget than Friday and Sunday departures, and avoiding UK school holidays makes the biggest difference of all. It is also worth checking flights from regional UK airports rather than defaulting to the nearest big one, as schedules and fares can vary noticeably. Booking early helps for summer and half-term, while the winter months can reward a more flexible approach.

For Málaga package holiday deals, which bundle flight, hotel and transfers, compare Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach on this page. Cheap package holidays to Málaga often include a room-only or bed-and-breakfast board basis, which suits a city full of places to eat out. Self-catering is another good way to keep costs down on a longer stay. If you are only after cheap breaks to Málaga, Málaga weekend deals for two or three nights pair well with the short airport transfer, as you lose very little of your trip to travel.

Getting there from the UK

Málaga Airport (AGP) has direct flights from the United Kingdom and is about eight minutes by road from the city. On a package, your transfer is over almost before it starts, and a taxi or car hire is equally simple. Granada Airport (GRX) also has direct UK flights and is around 68 minutes' drive away, which can be worth a look if dates or fares from Málaga do not suit.

If you plan to explore beyond the city, for example the Jardín Botánico La Concepción about 3 miles out, you can compare car hire at the airport here. Málaga also has its own ferry port right in the city, with Motril about 50 miles east and Algeciras about 70 miles west.
