Old Town or the Beach Strip
Your choice comes down to two settings. Staying in or near the centre puts you within a few minutes' walk of both castles, the lighthouse and Playa Chica. It suits those without a car and anyone who likes to explore on foot in the evening.
The alternative is the coast running north-west, towards Playa de Los Lances, Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma. Here the long beaches and the natural park are on your doorstep, though you will want car hire to get into town. With a population of around 18,000, Tarifa is a small town either way. The page shows live hotel prices so you can compare both areas.
Hire a car
The easiest way to reach Tarifa and the villages around it is a hire car from Gibraltar (GIB), about 24 min away.

Tips from Robin
Practical Tips for Tarifa
Tarifa sits on an exposed stretch of coast where the protected areas meet the sea, so pack a windproof layer even in summer. It is worth checking conditions before a beach day.
If you plan to visit Morocco, the ferry from Tarifa's own port to Tangier Ville saves you driving to Algeciras. Bring your passport, as you will be leaving Spain.
The weather swings sharply between seasons. March and October each bring around 170mm of rain, so a shoulder-season trip is best timed for April, May or September rather than either side of them.
