Self Catering Tenerife Los Cristianos: Where to Stay
Resort · Canary Islands · Tenerife · Spain
When British friends ask me about self catering in Tenerife, Los Cristianos is the resort I mention first, and for good reason. It sits on the island's sunny south coast, with Playa de Los Cristianos, Playa de las Vistas and Honda Beach right on the doorstep. Neighbouring Playa de las Américas is barely a mile away, so you get two resorts' worth of beaches and restaurants without needing a car every day. Tenerife South airport, which has direct flights from the UK, is around 14 minutes' drive from Playa de las Américas. Winters here are mild, with January highs around 21°C, and summers stay dry. Below I explain which part of the bay suits you, which styles of stay to consider, and how to book sensibly.

Los Cristianos itself is the place to base yourself if you want the sand close by. Playa de Los Cristianos, Playa de las Vistas and Honda Beach are all right in town, and the ferry port is just over a mile away, handy if you fancy a day trip by boat. Golf Las Américas, Playa Los Callados and the parrot park Loros del Sur are all within about half a mile.
Playa de las Américas, around a mile along the coast, is the natural alternative. It is the busier neighbour, closer to Siam Park, Aqualand Costa Adeje and Monkey Park, each about 2 miles away, and it puts the Costa Adeje coast and Playa del Duque, around 3 miles off, within easy reach. Families who plan several water park days often find this side of the bay practical.
If you prefer quieter walks, look towards the eastern edge of the area. The Reserva Natural Especial del Malpaís de la Rasca lies about 3 miles away, with Castillo de La Rasca and the Punta Rasca Lighthouse nearby, and the beach at La Arenita is around 4 miles out.
Apartments, apart hotels and villas
Most British searches for this resort are about self catering in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, and it is easy to see why. With beaches, shops and the seafront on foot, a kitchen of your own makes sense: you can shop locally, eat breakfast on a balcony and still walk to dinner. Self catering holidays also suit a stay of a fortnight or longer in the mild winter months.
Apart hotels are the middle ground, giving you a kitchenette alongside hotel-style reception and pool areas, a good fit for families who want flexibility without doing everything themselves. For larger groups, villas to rent in Los Cristianos and the surrounding hillsides give more space and privacy; holiday villas usually mean you will want car hire, which you can compare on this page.
If you would rather not cook at all, a package with half board or all inclusive takes care of meals. The hotel prices shown on this page let you compare the options side by side.
Booking your stay well
The south coast is dependable almost all year. July is typically dry with no rain days in the records, August reaches around 28°C, and even January sits around 21°C by day and 14°C at night. February is the shoulder month, slightly cooler with a few more showers, while March tends to bring the most rain of the year, though still modest.
UK school holidays are the most in-demand weeks for families, so if you are tied to those dates it pays to book early. Fly into Tenerife South rather than Tenerife North: it has direct flights from the UK and is around 14 minutes from Playa de las Américas, against roughly 53 minutes from the north airport.
A package with flights, hotel and transfers is the simplest way to book; you can compare deals from Jet2holidays, TUI, loveholidays and On the Beach here, alongside live hotel prices, tours and tickets, and car hire.
