What the climate is like

La Cala de Mijas weather is mild for most of the year, based on readings from the Fuengirola station just along the coast. The coolest months are December, January and February, with highs of 17 to 18°C and nights around 9°C. From April the temperature climbs steadily, reaching 28°C in June and peaking at 33°C in July and August, when nights stay warm at 22 to 23°C.

Rain is concentrated in two windows. March is the wettest month of early spring, with 85 mm across nine days, and October is the wettest of the year, with 117 mm over ten days. Summer, by contrast, is almost completely dry. The best months to visit are April, May, June, September and November, while January, February, March, October and December make good shoulder months for anyone happy to trade a little rain for cooler, quieter days.

The year month by month

Winter, from December to February, brings highs of 17 to 18°C and lows of 9°C. December is fairly dry, with 14 mm over four days, and January sees 27 mm over six. February turns wetter at 67 mm across seven days, and March continues the trend with 85 mm over nine days, though highs reach 20°C.

April marks the turn. Highs of 23°C and only 8 mm of rain over three days make it one of the most reliable months of the year. May reaches 25°C with four wet days, and June climbs to 28°C with five. July and August are the hottest and driest, both at 33°C, with 2 mm and 6 mm of rain respectively and a single wet day each.

September eases back to 28°C, though rain returns on about six days. October is still warm at 25°C, but it is the wettest month, with 117 mm over ten days. November settles down again, with 22°C highs and five wet days, which is why it sits among the best months for a late-autumn break. What to pack by season

For July and August, pack for real heat: light cotton or linen, a sunhat, sunglasses and plenty of high-factor sun cream. With highs of 33°C and warm nights of 22 to 23°C, you will rarely need more than a thin layer after dark. June and September call for much the same, at 28°C.

In spring and late autumn, from April to May and in November, days of 22 to 25°C suit shorts and T-shirts, but evenings dip to 12 to 15°C, so bring a light jumper or jacket. If you travel in October or March, add a compact waterproof, as these are the rainiest months.

Winter visitors should expect pleasant afternoons around 17 to 18°C and cooler evenings near 9°C. A warm jacket, long trousers and closed shoes make sense, along with something for the occasional wet day in January and February.

What to pack for La Cala de Mijas in October

  • T-shirts by day and a light layer for the evening: October averages 25°C by day and 16°C at night.
  • A light rain jacket: about 10 rainy days in October.
