Cala d'Or in October and All Year: A Mallorca Resort Guide

Resort · Balearic Islands · Mallorca · Spain

Cala d'Or sits on Mallorca's south-east coast, and for many British travellers the question is when rather than whether. Cala d'Or in October is a strong case: island averages give daytime highs around 25°C and nights near 18°C, with roughly nine rainy days in the month. The resort is about 40 minutes by road from Palma de Mallorca airport, which has direct flights from the UK. Within a few miles you have small coves such as Caló de Sa Torre and Cala Barca Trencada, the harbour villages of Portopetro and Portocolom, and Mondragó Natural Park. This guide covers the area, the weather month by month, transfers, and what you can compare and book here.

What kind of place this is

Cala d'Or is a coastal resort on Mallorca's south-east shore, built around a string of small coves rather than one long strand. That shape defines a holiday here: short walks or drives between beaches, two working harbour villages on either side, and a stretch of protected coastline close by.

The surroundings reward curiosity beyond the sunlounger. Closos de Can Gaià, a listed archaeological site, is about 3 miles away near Portocolom, and the Talayotic town of l'Hospitalet Vell lies around 7 miles out. Two lighthouses, Porto Colom lighthouse and the Far de Cala Figuera beacon, mark the coast within about 4 miles.

Portopetro, Portocolom and the coves

Portopetro is the closest neighbour, around 2 miles away and much smaller, with a population of under 800. It is the gateway to Mondragó Natural Park and sits near the coves of Caló de Sa Torre and Cala Barca Trencada, both within about 2 to 3 miles of Cala d'Or.

Portocolom, about 3 miles away and home to around 4,600 people, is the larger of the two. From there you can reach Cala Marçal, roughly 2.5 miles from Cala d'Or, and the beach at s'Algar on the east coast in the municipality of Felanitx, about 4 miles away. Porto Colom lighthouse and Closos de Can Gaià are close by too, so a day here mixes swimming with a little history.

When to go

Climate figures come from Alcúdia, the island's nearest recording station, so treat them as a guide for Mallorca as a whole. Summer is hot and dry: highs of 32°C in July and 31°C in August, with July seeing only around two rainy days. April and November, both singled out as good months, bring highs near 21°C, which suits walking and sightseeing.

October sits in between, with highs around 25°C, lows near 18°C and about nine rainy days, so expect warm afternoons with the odd shower. Winter is mild rather than beach weather, with January and February highs of 16°C, and February is the wettest month on record here.

Getting there from the UK

Palma de Mallorca airport (PMI) is the gateway, with direct flights from the United Kingdom. The drive to Cala d'Or takes about 40 minutes, and the transfer to Portopetro is similar, while Portocolom is around 41 minutes away. On a package, that transfer is normally included, so you go from arrivals to your hotel without arranging anything yourself.

If you prefer independence, car hire from the airport makes it easy to reach the coves, the natural park and the archaeological sites. Ferry ports at Alcúdia, around 30 miles away, and Palma, about 34 miles, connect the island with the rest of the Balearics.
